can anybody explain what a trickle is? Or is there anywhere a (short) description of what happend while crunching a Climate Model?

Hi Stefan,

because a predictor-WU takes quit a long time to finish, the client sends a small info about how far the progress of the actual crunched WU is. This small info-package was named TRICKLE.

There are more than 750,000+ Time Steps per work unit. Every 10,802 TS's the app reports back and work done is given credit. Your account name won't appear on any team you've joined until cpdn receives the first trickle, FYI.

What is a trickle?

The water trickled from the spring
in tiny rivulets meandering down the hill
to meet other trickles joining in and together, spill,
as trickles do, into a babbling brook.

With trickles joining from here and there
they tumbled on without a care, until they met
with quite swirl, a stream of trickles whose course was set
for a grassy meadow filled with buttercups and hay.

More and more trickles joined in the fun.
On and on, and on and on the trickles run, until,
through valleys, village, town and city they spill
into that mélange we call the Sea, see, CPDN server sea.

Hi, Stefan,

Not sure how 'short' will do but if you click on "Home", top left of this page, and then take the top home-page link; it will start you down the path you seek. Then, if still wanting more, you can dig into the science pages.

In short, this model covers the globe with a 73x96 grid, 73 latitude, by 96 longitude. It then stacks 19 vertical levels on that grid (then for good measure does such things as compute eight-year averages and a potload of other things). I think that is 7,008 cells per level, for a total of 133,152 cells -- and calculations must consider what is going on in cells around, above, and below....

For now, there is a "slab" ocean, meaning the currents flow but there is no vertical exchange (upwelling, etc). That comes later, in the "coupled" model.

In this part of the experiment, there are three 15-year Phases. The Phases are broken into 30-minute intervals (a "time step"). There are 259,248 (or 259.248) time steps per Phase.

It's a bit mind-boggling, actually. Your machine will do one helluva lot of work to finish 45 years of modeling, all to good cause, IMO.
