Welcome to Purple Bumpkin, who has just joined the project and the team - happy crunching, thanks for joining and we hope to meet you soon in one of the forums ;-)

Meantime, the team has shot past the milestone of 1,000 completed climate models, counting BBC, CPDN and SAP - well done everyone! Details can be seen on this page of the team stats

And congratulations to rrodway, who completed his 6th CPDN 160-year model on Friday, and to our stats guru IanM, who delivered \"twins\" (i.e. 2 160-year models) yesterday and has now completed 100 climate models in total!

Congrats to Lockleys, who completed his 4th 160-year CPDN model 2 days ago, and to adempster, who completed his 22nd such model today. Well done, guys, it\'s very satisfying to bring home one of those long ones! And the team has now completed 128 of them in CPDN.

Congrats to Edward Wright, who completed his 7th long CPDN model a couple of days ago - his 17th climate model altogether, including SAP models and a couple of shorter CPDN ones.

That\'s a lot of credits, Edward! Have you (and other experienced crunchers with a good model completion record) noticed from the News thread, top of Number Crunching, that CPDN Beta still needs new members? There\'s still an occasional spinup reissue available, which is a chance to let one\'s computer make a very important contribution to future experiments. Plus early versions of other models which sometimes do bizarre things.

I see you also have a Mac which there aren\'t many of on Beta at the moment.

Beta credits get transferred to members\' CPDN accounts.

Hi mo.v, thanks for the message.

Alas my Mac\'s just started anther 160 year model. I guess I could either abandon it (it\'s only done < 2% so-far) and get a beta model, or just get a beta model and swap between the two. Are the beta models as heavy as the 160 year ones?

Unlike some team Scotland members, I have to make do with two CPU cores, not eight :)

I could also set my PC to use beta models when the current two 160 year models complete in November. However, as you said, the Mac is probably more valuable here as it\'s rare in beta-land.

Where do I find more info the beta project?

Thanks,

Edward

Hi again.

Ok, what the heck. I signed up for the beta program (why is it easier to find with Google than a link?). I\'ve got one beta model on my Mac now, and my resource share is 50/50 with cpdn vs cpdn beta.

Cheers,

Edward

Sorry, I should have given a link to Beta.

These are the current Beta applications:

http://cpdnbeta.oerc.ox.ac.uk/apps.php

If you have a HADRM Spinup, it will run for 160 years and work like a HADCM or BBC model ie a trickle each year and a file upload every 10 years. Strictly speaking they\'re not being beta-tested as they\'re almost all very stable. However, they were originally supposed to run for 200 years but so far all have crashed 30 minutes into New Year\'s Day 2081. We have to upload 3 files manually from Dec 2080. But if you\'ve got one of these you\'ll have plenty of time to think about that! There\'s a post by Myles in the Science section of the Beta forum explaining how they\'ll be used.

If you have a HADCM, I think it will run for 80 years. Or maybe 40. The number of years is in the model name. These are being tested for BOINC6 compliancy before being released on the main project. But you can run them on either BOINC5 or BOINC6 as they have to be compliant with both.

In the Number Crunching section of the Beta forum there\'s a separate thread for each type of model and version on each OS, or there should be.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I have a HADCM (80 year), I guess it\'s still useful to run this in BOINC 5 / OS X.

Congratulations to Angthorn, who was recently nominated as User of the Day in CPDN. ;-) We don\'t see much of Angthorn in any of the forums (fora?) so I\'ll just mention it everywhere in the hope that he sees it!

Edward, great crunching - I\'ve been watching for you hitting the half million mark, when more congrats will be in order!

Regarding Beta models: although, as Mo says, Beta credits get transferred to CPDN, I think I\'m right in saying this doesn\'t happen until models complete? I\'ve seen a few of our fellow team members commenting that, having taken on BETA models, their CPDN RAC has dropped. Presumably it will all even out in the end - though there did seem to be a lengthy series of hiccups when talister and Ray Murray had Beta 2 credits transferred then removed several times, which kind of confused the team\'s record-keeping at the time!

The transfer of credits from Beta to CPDN took Tolu a long time to get right which isn\'t surprising because BOINC wasn\'t designed to aggregate credits from different projects. What Tolu did at first worked for some Beta members but not for others, so he cancelled that and started from scratch. If I remember rightly, his second attempt worked, but only for the other group of people, so that had to be cancelled too. And there were other anomalies, like some Beta members\' credits going to two different CPDN accounts. The mods, particularly Thyme Lawn, spent a lot of time trying to work out what was happening and why.

Anyway, Tolu then got it working properly and we do know that when previously-transferred credits were taken away, they were subsequently transferred to CPDN again. In some cases this happened more than once. Nearly all the moderators were affected so we were watching very carefully what was going on.

The only Beta members whose credits are not now being transferred to CPDN are a small number who haven\'t got a CPDN account. I\'ve mentioned this twice in the Beta news thread and some time ago sent a private message to every one of these members advising them to attach to CPDN using the same email address. Some responded and took action, some didn\'t.

Quite honestly, it wasn\'t a good idea anyway for people who had never run climate models on the main project to attach to Beta. But some people attach to every new project without investigating in advance what they entail, who\'s running them, whether their computer can do it, or even whether there\'s any worthwhile science in the tasks or in the minds of the project programmers.

Since last Wednesday the program that transfers Beta credits to CPDN has been turned off, but Tolu\'s now reactivated it. This means Beta members will soon get another biggish spike on CPDN and the stats sites.

Credits transfer daily, the same as on the main site.
Only Total credits are transferred, as the RAC calculations are a complex business, and have been left \"as is\".
If the people whose RAC has dropped joined beta by moving a computer off the main site and on to the beta site, then, yes, their RAC will drop on the main site. Which leads to the interesting phenomena on the main site\'s Top Participants page, of a person jumping up the list at a rate greater than their shown RAC would imply.
I have 2 identical Intel quads, one on each site, so my \'jump\' is twice my shown RAC.

Hi

I think it\'s all nice keeping track of credits etc., but some do seem a bit obsessed about it. We\'re trying to help science here, though I guess if people treat it as a game to score points but do some good in the process no harm\'s done.

Just my two Euro cents worth...

Thanks for detailed explanations, Mo and Les, much appreciated. I don\'t think anyone on our team was complaining, just explaining to the rest of us why their RAC had dropped. As Edward says, it\'s the science that\'s important and credits are just a bit of fun and added interest.

Both Edward Wright and Rory have now passed 500,000 credits in CPDN - very well done, chaps ;-) Here are fireworks!

Of course we\'re only really interested in the science here.

So who crossed the line 1st, Rory or yours truly? :D

Thanks for the encouragement, and yeah well done Rory.

Oh well, lots of lap records to be broken then! ;-)

Can\'t readily keep track of credits at present because the Scottish Forum - and hence the team stats - are off-line. I rather suspect Ian\'s away and has forgotten to renew his domain registration! Presumably he\'ll try to check e-mails from somewhere and work out what\'s happened - meantime we can\'t e-mail him either!

Well, with the team forum off-line, at least we\'ll perhaps get a few more of our team members visiting the climate fora instead, which would be good! ;-)

A warm team Scotland welcome to jgrzeb, who has just joined the team in CPDN. Thanks for joining, happy continued crunching and we hope to meet you in one of the forums/fora soon. Sorry you\'ve joined when the team forum and team stats are off-line, but I\'m sure normal service will be resumed as soon as possible! ;-)
