Hi, I\'ve been running Boinc with Climateprediction since November and it has run OK. I understand that Climateprediction is very heavy on computers. I usually leave the computer on 24/7 but since the last month or so the computer suddenly hangs and I have to shut it down manually. Then wait a minute or so, turn it back on. Sometimes it starts again immediately, sometimes I have to wait several hours for it to start. I\'ve come to the conclusion that it must be Climateprediction causing this since it doesn\'t happen when I have the task suspended. Does anyone else have this kind of problem? What can I do to solve it? Cheers, |

Hi, It may be worth running a \'stress test\' for 24 hours or so to confirm that the PC\'s hardware is happy. I like to use Prime95\'s torture test (the linux version is called \'mprime\'). You need to run one copy per CPU core using the affinity option. The most likely problem is overheating - the P4s get very hot, and dust builds up on the heatsink and fan, which makes them get even hotter. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. Allright, thank you. Of course the problem must be overheating. I don\'t think I\'ll run a stress test but I\'ll look for some program that can see the temperature of the CPU. The computer is about 8 years old and I think I opened the chassi once to clean it inside. Time to do it again :) Cheers, |

\'sensors\' or \'lmsensors\' can detect the CPU temperature in Linux, although I had real problems installing it on my box (didn\'t like 64-bit, I think). If you can dual-boot into XP then it is much easier, there are a lot of utilities which will do it. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |
