Would like to know the amount of data that is being send to your servers when my computer sends a Trickle-up message? |

It varies. I think the slab models (hadsm) were under 1K. This was mostly a "I'm still running" message, which just contained a header ("variety"), the model name, the phase, the timestep, and the cpu time. More recent models have also used the trickle_up file to return some science data, in addition to that in the less frequent zip file. My current FAMOUS models have trickle_up files of around 4.4 - 4.5 K. They contain the above info, plus some of the science data created since the last trickle_up. I haven't had any yet for the just released hadcm3lgeo models, which are a variety of Coupled Ocean model. Backups: Here |

Thanks for the information. Just gave away a computer to a friend which still had 4 work units running and since he is on limited upload/download internet system he didn't want to go over his daily allowed rate. |

In which case it'll be the occasional zip file that causes problems, not the trickles. For the hadam3 regional models, this is around 3 Meg, 6 Meg, and 13 Megs, depending on which of the 3 applies. I forget what it is for the FAMOUS model. More later when I get one. Backups: Here |

This news post gives a full breakdown of the network load of the regional models. Trickles for HadCM3 are 92KB and upload files are about 16MB. Tasks on my C2Q Q6600 normally take a bit over 8 days to generate an upload file. Upload files for FAMOUS are about 5.5MB, with the last one being about 7.5MB. Tasks on my C2Q Q6600 normally generate 2 upload files per day. "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer |

As your friend's daily upload/download allowance is limited, if you think the uploaded files may go over his limit you could advise him just to run one model at a time, suspending the other three temporarily. When the first completes, let another start. If this makes any of the models go past their report deadline, don't worry. CPDN is different from other projects in this respect. The server will still accept files uploaded past their deadline and the researchers will still use the results. It would be better to do this than abandon the models or have your friend pay excess charges. You'd have to explain to your friend how to suspend models in the Boinc manager Tasks tab. Cpdn news |
