BOINC is additionally trying to send those missing trickle-up messages every hour or so but gives the same error message and has been giving it since the last successfull trickle you can access via the website. Unfortunately I have started running a massive RNAworld unit parallely to the CP unit and as those do not have checkpoints I can try neither of your suggestions right now or 450 hours of work would be wasted. ;) So essentially now I have to rephrase my question: Will anything bad happen to the CP-WU as long as I cannot trickle and report the finished product or can I simply wait the unknown time the RNAworld WU still needs (as they still have not been able to fix the ETA issues those WUs are having and 100% have been reached five days ago with God knows how many days actually still left), then try all of your suggestions and hope that fixes the problem? Thanks! - Frederik |

Steinar Just uploaded a bunch from 4 models on the other computer OK. (Looks at the server ...) (They're not there) (They're not there) (They're not there) Oh thank Heavens, there they are. (They show as 8.34am 17 Aug 2013.) |

Frederik There's no hurry for the uploads, BUT ... If you leave it for 10 years, the project might not still be here. If you leave it for six months, someone else's data might get used to extend that model into the future. Although even then, your data will get added to the huge ensemble that the project is building. So in the next couple of weeks would be nice. And any lingering problems at the project should be fixed by then. And if my suggestion doesn't work, some debug statements may be in order. |

If it is going to take another ten years to complete the RNAworld WU I will personally run the CP-WU's calculations in my head! Anyway, I will let you know how a system restart affects the troubles I am having as soon as I can restart... ... or as soon as there is a power outage, in which case I will need a few hours to compose myself and grieve the loss of my "Shewanella baltica" WU first, though. |

I had the same problem with one of my computers, but the first try after a reboot following a Windows update was successful. |

I'm obviously doing something wrong, because after a WU stopped working some weeks ago, I've not received any more work units. Are there any? If so, is there something that needs to be done to tell the computer to fetch them? |

There's no work at the moment, as can be seen from the Server Status page, linked to in the blue menu to the left, 5 from the bottom. Keep an eye on the News and Announcements thread near the top of this section, which is where things like this get posted. It can be Subscribed to, to receive an email when new posts are made there. But something IS wrong with your computer, because it's crashing nearly all of the data sets that have been sent to it. Things to consider: You seem to have left the option Suspend work if CPU usage is above 0 means no restriction to the default of 25%, with the result that BOINC and the model keep stopping and starting. These climate models don't like that. Has the BOINC\projects section of your computer been excluded from all virus scanning? Some of them lock files to check them, and again, these climate models don't like that. DON'T interrupt the models anywhere near a 25% processing point. This is where they pause to zip up the data and send it back to the server. They don't like interruptions here either. |

The pending trickle problem is remedied but how come the points are not being updated? It shows as it was before the server went down! |

That's a matter that is still to be fixed. |

The credit processing is a significant overhead, so perhaps the admins were/are waiting for the backlog of all the uploads etc to go away before running it (after all, there was nearly 2 weeks of work waiting to be uploaded & imported). I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

I think that I may have found a problem. Further up in this thread you advise Keith Jillings to set Suspend work if CPU usage is above at 0 so the computer wont constantly be suspending the work every time he does something on the computer. I checked my settings and found that mine was also at 25%. The problem is that when I try to change it to 0 it wont change. I bring up the accounts page, click edit preferences change the value to 0 and then change click update preferences. I even click update in the Boinc Managers projects tab to quickly send the changes to the server. The problem is that when I check later it is back to 25%. Is the server rejecting changes? Did the server replacement reset everyones settings to defaults? Can they be changed? |

Mine shows '--- %' when viewing preferences, and (empty)% when editing preferences, which I presume indicates that it has no limit. I set that up a few months ago. What happens if you clear the field, rather than entering a zero? I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

Like Mike, my settings are still as they were, at --%, which is how it shows when it has been set to 0. **************** When you run several projects, the server's BOINC settings propagate from one project to the next, as your BOINC client makes contact with them for any reason. If you add a new project, and forget to change any settings there so that they are the same as your other projects, you'll find that before too long your 'old' project settings now match those of your 'new' project; i.e. they're back to the default. I guess that the way to add a new project is to put the Network setting to Off, open your account page on on old project and go to the BOINC prefs, then add the new project, open a new browser window to the 'new' BOINC prefs, and swap back and forth, checking each option on the 'old', and changing those on the 'new' to be the same. After Updating the page on the 'new' project, set the Network back to on/as per prefs. *********** And any project that NEEDS to have the setting at a non zero value, should be set up on a different venue to cpdn. |

Mike, What happens when you clear a field? I don't know what BOINC does, but the normal programming convention when the account-owner clears a preference that was previously set, is to go back to using the server-wide default (whatever the BOINC project or CPDN decided that was). Internally the system stores a value for that item in the account preferences (-1, say) that means "use the system's default value", and displays that as either the system default value, or blank, or something like '---'. In BOINC's case there is the complication of multiple projects and a single person having multiple places to set preferences. I expect that clients would revert to the value that was most recently set on any of the attached projects. A little unpredictable for people, especially if the 'most recent' value isn't communicated to the other projects for display on account web pages. * * * An alternative to what Les suggests, if you have few computers, is to set the preferences in the BOINC Manager's "Computing Preferences" setting, which is in the "Tools" menu in advanced view. I like this method because I don't have to think too hard, but it'd be a pain if you had more than a dozen or so clients. |

I did try entering zero, it seemed to work OK (i.e., still showed ---/blank afterwards). At one point I had multiple sets of preferences (default + home) which was confusing. I deleted all but the default preferences. I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |

If I knew where all those settings are, or how to change them, I would. I just signed up for some projects that interested me (starting twelve years or more ago) and updates and added a few as I went along. They seem to work OK, except for Climateprediction (which did, but doesn't now), and Spinhenge which I think is defunct. Where do I go to change 25% to 0%? It's not in the Tools - Computing Preferences screen on my PC. |

Ah - found it! It's on the SETI at Home website. 25% changed to 0% and became --%. |

Actually it's on your account page in ALL projects. There's a button in the Projects tab of your manager for your account. Just select which ever project name you're interested in. |

I still have the problem of not being able to change the settings on the Computing Preferences page of Your Account. I have tried setting the suspend work if the CPU usage is above to blank instead of 0 to no effect. Nothing changes on the account page, even after closing the page, and clicking update in projects. The work buffer also will not change from its default of 0.25 days.I have not added any new projects in several months, but, did run several of the ones that I was already attached to during the CPDN outage. Fortunately, I can control both of those on the local machines from Computing Preferences in tools on the Boinc manager. Has anyone been able to change these settings from the account page, or is this function broken. |

... I just changed it from (blank) to 99% and back to 0 (blank) again, seemed OK. Have you got multiple preferences set up? i.e., home/school/work, or just the default? I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |
