when I calculate present progress against the available time to the reporting date it seems very unlikely to be finished in time (even when setting resource share to 100%).
The screensaver indicates that there are 3 phases. Are the 2nd and 3rd phase considerably faster than the 1st phase to catch up?

No, you won't notice much difference between phases.

Climate modelling is a very demanding computer task, and older desktop machines are not really up to it. But a 1.6 MHz Pentium should complete a model in three months or so if you run your computer all the time, and plenty of people have successfully run climate models on this and similar hardware. It is more difficult to make progress if you are not keeping your machine switched, on, of course, and part of the difficulty is that the model saves every 144 timesteps, or three model days. This means that you lose work done since the last save point when you switch off, and this is more of a problem on a slower machine.

You can also save a lot of processing power by not running the screensaver or graphics window except for brief periods to check progress, and by not keeping BOINC open in the work window. Unless you have a modern and powerful graphics card the graphics take too much CPU time for your machine.
