I received the following 3 messages on my BOINC manager tonight from the server with no explanation while I actually have one of these jobs running on my computer with a deadline coming up on April 22 so I'm wondering what the heck is going on???. The WU I have going on is task HadAM3P anz_rcy6_2012_1_008746396_0

My computer is #1284902 in your system and is a windowx 64 bit system so if you are no longer able to run this type of software on your system I may as well abort this program now but I would like to get credit for the nearly 650 hours that have been put into this work unit that I am now being told is not available for this project any longer. I have noticed that as my computer has been running hours the clock has been increasing in time but the remaining time to run has not been decreasing so the time remaining has been decreasing very slowly and the job still has nearly 540 hours remaing when its already run 640...something seems off on this. when there were 900 hours to the task at the start.

Hi,

There are currently over 13 thousand of the hadcm3s tasks available. The windows versions of the anz tasks have been taken off as they are the only type of tasks that will run on Mac's at the moment. The ew, pnw and afr tasks will when the scientists next submit some all work on Windows only.

Tasks being produced for only one OS might not be ideal for all of us crunchers all of the time but it does simplify things for the programmers.

Looking at the tasks that have failed on your box it is probably worth looking at the top post in the preferences section and following the advice there. Also making sure the BOINC program and data directories are excluded from virus scans.

Your task was issued months ago, before that model was blocked from Windows systems, so it is still valid and should be run to completion.

CPDN awards credit when your computer uploads zip files, so the work your computer has completed will have been rewarded. You currently have 1503.36 awarded for that task.

The estimated Time Remaining is just that "Estimated" and can sometimes increase.

Thank you for the explanation. I appreciate it but it certainly would have been nice for that to accompany the message when the announcement was sent saying that windows jobs were not going to be available for these tasks anymore instead of just a message with out any explanation. Not everyone keeps up with all the message boards all the time.

I agree, however,I don't know what is involved in getting BOINC to send out messages like that. What I do know is that the programmers are mostly running to just stand still. The notices I get all seem to be automatic and as different crunchers will have different priorities as to which notices they would like to receive, I don't see a way to do it without spamming everyone?

Unless someone with more knowledge of the system knows different?

On the other hand,
if you go to "Your Account" when in BOINC manager, then click on "Server Status", you will see all the models and the number of tasks that are available for each one.

You will also see which ones are reserved for Windows, MAC or Linux.

I agree that it would be nice to have notification of changes, but as Dave pointed out we would probably be confused by information overload.

An occasional check on "Server Status" is much easier.
