Message 53122 - Posted: 16 Dec 2015, 12:10:20 UTC - in response to Message 53121.

Dave..There's no work units available at the moment, and no hidden folders in the trash bin...There's no folders of any kind on my system to do with CPDN.

I knew it was a bit of a long shot and as you say with no work available it is a matter of waiting and hopefully you being at the computer when work next comes in.

I had that problem with S@H and resolved it.

Can you locate the S@H folder in BOINC's data directory (projects sub-directory)? CPDN's directory should be right next to it. And it would have been created as soon as you attached to the project, ready to receive the downloaded files.

Edit - the folder will be called 'climateprediction.net', rather than the abbreviated CPDN we write here to save typing.

Most of the model types I have had recently don't have graphics, though as the current windows ones don't state specifically, "no graphics" they probably do. Sadly as stated elsewhere on these boards the graphics are not as useful diagnostically as they used to be.

Now that you have another model, I hope that you've looked to see where the files are.

The only files that get deleted are data files. ALL of the program files for that model type remain on your computer ready for the next model.

The only way there'll disappear is:
1) You do a Project reset
2) You do a Project remove
3) You manually delete all of the project folders
Have you been doing any of these?

You can see where the data folders are from the Event Log, which is in the Manager's menu. It's the 4th one on the list.

In the boinc folder, the one just before the projects folder, there'll be a folder for each project whose name starts: account_(then the name of the project).

I have a theory about what's wrong, but I'd like answers to the above first.

Les..If you mean the blue box on the left of this page, then 4th from top is Downloads and 4th from bottom is User Map.

Neither of those selections would take you to a page that shows WU files.

Now that you have another model, I hope that you've looked to see where the files are.

Unfortunately i don't see anyway of inserting screen grabs into this chat box that isn't a url..Not sure what the logic there was with that, but if there's a way i can do that i can simply show you the contents of my BOINC folder...There's nothing in it remotely like the folders you mention..Hidden of otherwise.

Les was referring to BOIMC managers menu. Click on advanced, then event log. Unfortunately, if BOINC has been stopped since the files were downloaded then the event log will no longer show where the files have been downloaded to.

The BOINC Manager Event Log gives the data location at startup:

10-Dec-2015 22:46:36 [---] Starting BOINC client version 7.6.20 for windows_intelx86
10-Dec-2015 22:46:36 [---] log flags: file_xfer, sched_ops, task, cpu_sched, sched_op_debug
10-Dec-2015 22:46:36 [---] Libraries: libcurl/7.45.0 OpenSSL/1.0.2d zlib/1.2.8
10-Dec-2015 22:46:36 [---] Data directory: C:\BOINCdata
10-Dec-2015 22:46:36 [---] Running under account Richard Haselgrove

(note that my location is non-standard, precisely to avoid this kind of confusion)

But once you find the root location, the contents are standard:

But laptop which has just had a restart today shows what you suggest it should Richard.

Edit:
But I can find it in stdaeout.old, though anyone who knows where that is probably knows where their data is to start with!

That's why I had to go all the way back to 10-Dec-2015, and it shows in stdoutdae.txt format - the Manager display scrolls older entries off the top if there's no restart.

ok..i've finally found these damn files..They were in the folder 'program data'.

Is there something inparticular i should be looking for now to know why the graphics aren't working?

Message 53137 - Posted: 17 Dec 2015, 13:00:16 UTC - in response to Message 53136.

Check in the projects folder for a file named something like wah2_eu25_graphics.exe Because I don't have a windows machine and haven't had one for quite a long time, I don't know exactly what it will be named. If it isn't there, the model doesn't have graphics.

If it is there and graphics aren't working, it may be worth going to the command prompt to start BOINC. http://commandwindows.com/windows-8-commands.htm

(The link shows how to do this if you or anyone else reading doesn't know how.)

Having done that, when you click on graphics, if it isn't working, then the command window should show an error message which may give a clue. (In Linux it told me what the missing library was that was causing the error before I learned there was an easier way of finding out if anything was missing.) Hope this is of some help.

sorry but opening command prompt seems a bit drastic and something i don't think i should be messing with...If the graphics are greyed out and i have to go into commands to try and fix it then it's obviously a bug within CPDN, and as such, should be left for them to sort out.

If the graphics are greyed out then they aren't available for that particular model type and there is nothing wrong with your system.

I cut my teeth on DOS and when I switched to Linux it was in the days when you didn't have much choice but learn some command line stuff. Anyway if it is greyed out it wouldn'
t help.

It seems to be running fine despite no graphics so i'm going to just let it alone i think.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Running without graphics should allow more horsepower to be used for processing the workunit...and finish in less time...

Back in the early days of SETI (i'm one of the "99ers"), the first thing you did was turn off the screensaver so the single core processor could devote all of its meager horsepower to the workunit...

And when i joined CPDN five years ago i also turned off the graphics/screensaver as soon as i saw it pop up...and did the same for the Folding project...
