All the latest versions for all OS's are listed and available here: Except they aren't. This machine https://www.cpdn.org/cpdnboinc//show_host_detail.php?hostid=1425895 is running 7.6.33 for Linux which isn't listed. |

Hmmm. You are correct, I can't explain that. Nor can I explain how we are apparently going from the BOINC Windows Client 7.6.33 to 7.7.2. There seems to be a new group of volunteer developers involved in the build and lots of chatter in the BOINC developers forum about what's included in the new release and the proper way to release the new client for Beta testing. The new Windows 7.7.2 has some reported problems already, so I advise some care before downloading and using this new version until it gets some more testing! |

And for the techies it's also possible to compile its own boinc client, or find some elsewhere --> https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Anonymous_platform https://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/wiki/DownloadOther so the platform you saw could also be a dev testing a version, precisely. |

Should have said, the 7.6.33 I am using here is from Ubuntu's package manager so fairly mainstream. |

There is now a summary of the changes made in BOINC 7.7.2. Please note this is currently an "alpha" release and it's for WINDOWS ONLY at the moment. Release notes are here: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=11539 |

There is now a summary of the changes made in BOINC 7.7.2. Please note this is currently an "alpha" release and it's for WINDOWS ONLY at the moment. BOINC builds with an odd point release version (x.7.y x.5.y, x,3,y...) have always been considered development/alpha builds. There is now a new version of the BOINC client for MAC OS X (BOINC Version 7.6.34). This fixes a problem with the notices tab for users who upgraded to MAC OS version 12.10.4. The upgraded client is available at: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php Art Masson |

Just an update. I've been running BOINC Version 7.7.2 (It's still viewed as an "alpha" release) for a week or so now on two Windows 10 machines with no obvious problems. Art Masson |

Work is underway to develop new versions of both the Windows and Mac OS BOINC clients. Alpha testing of a version 7.8 for both platforms is in progress. Art Masson |

Some additional detail on the BOINC 7.8.0 releases in alpha testing: David Anderson wrote: I released 7.8.0 for testing (Windows 32 and 64, with and without VBox). Alpha testers: this is a potential public release candidate; please test it thoroughly, including the VBox versions. Changes relative to 7.7.2: - Vbox installers have Vbox 5.1.22 rather than 5.1.18 (should work on Win 10) minor changes: - On startup, show alternate platforms - On startup, show account manager name if using one - Don't crash if can't open gui_rpc_auth.cfg - Fix display of max disk usage support for future features (not testable at this point): - Add mechanism for account managers to send opaque data to schedulers - Include peak FLOPS in GPU descriptions sent to AMs and schedulers - Add GUI RPCs for read/write app_config.xml files (for BOINCTasks) -- David Charlie Fenton wrote: BOINC 7.8.0 for Macintosh is available for testing. In addition to the changes mentioned for Windows, the Mac build has extensive modifications to replace deprecated system calls with ones currently recommended by Apple, to ensure continued compatibility with future versions of Mac OS X. Please test thoroughly. Cheers, --Charlie Fenton |

Hopefully the various BOINC clients for Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS X will stay viable as OS versions progress, bugs are found, or security vulnerabilities are discovered. I am still running boinc-client-7.2.33-3.git1994cc8.el6.x86_64 because that is the latest version supported by the EPEL project for Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 6.9 (Santiago) that is the version of Linux I am running. Red Hat support their releases for 10 years, but pretty much do no enhancements, just bug and security fixes. Also, Red Hat do not support the Boinc applications. So not only is BOINC not doing much support of the boinc client, but neither is EPEL. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/EPEL |

Jean-David -- I understand your situation. Please understand that I have little ability to influence the BOINC development process and priorities other than as a user. My intent here is only to provide a convent place on this thread to provide some updated status on what the BOINC development community is doing for the benefit of the CPDN community. I too am concerned that the BOINC client is not keeping up with changes and updates to stay current and viable. I can only suggest that if you have specific concerns or needs that you visit the BOINC site, join that community and make your needs known to see what actions you can motivate. I have been advocating updates to both the Windows and Mac OS clients...since those are the ones I use, and I'm a member of the public testing/developers who test the Windows and MacOS clients as new versions are developed -- as a way to help the process. Best of luck to raise your concerns about the Red Hat Linux versions with the BOINC community!! Art Masson |

What people should understand is that BOINC is no longer developed and programmed by three dedicated paid people, but since 2015 by the BOINC community. That is everyone here, you, me, the project people, and a handful programmers. BOINC clients being built for Windows has now got a dedicated team again (David and Christian know how to build the client/manager and add these into an installer and sign it that so it is behaving correctly). BOINC clients for the Mac are still built by Charlie, for as long as his old OS X is capable of doing so. BOINC clients for Linux however are built exclusively by the Linux distribution's package maintainers. It's what 'Berkeley' also advises, first look in your distro's repository for the latest BOINC version. It's done that way so that these versions are built against the libraries that distro has, so you have less of a problem getting BOINC to run due to it missing certain libraries. The BOINC download page will for the near future not have any newer Linux versions anymore. Possibly never. Jord. |
