We have closed the project down completely, though I am uncertain whether this will stop BOINC clients detaching from the project which is what they are doing. I'm not sure how successful this closure has been. At 10:38:55 AM UK time BOINC reckons that it successfully finished an upload, i.e. a trickle. No sign of it in the task information, but then again the latest trickles for all my tasks are on 13 September or earlier. |

Did the project really not foresee this?Pretty sure that had they done so things would have been done differently. Mind you I have lost count of the number of times I have gotten out of my depth playing around with software or indeed my website when I maintained one. The next test is to see if the zips are still uploading. I will be away from the computer when the next few are due to go so will check when I get back about 17:30 UK time. |

I now see this in the Notices part of BOINC cpdn.org: Notice from BOINC Master URL changed from https://main.cpdn.org/ to https://www.climateprediction.net/ 17-Sep-2024 09:49:15 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- cpdn.org: Notice from BOINC Master URL changed from https://climateprediction.net/ to https://main.cpdn.org/ 17-Sep-2024 02:54:30 So it was all for nothing and all a bit late for my two part completed tasks that were forcibly aborted with presumably no credit. I appreciate sometimes things go wrong but this was a proper mess up that I can only assume was not tested before implementation? I seem to recall a change was made a few years ago when the URL was changed from http://climateprediction.net/ to https://climateprediction.net/. When that happened all currently running tasks were allowed to complete and report, then I detached and reattached to the project gracefully. [Edit] I can see the reversion of the URL has again reset the project on my local client: 17-Sep-2024 09:49:15 | cpdn.org | Scheduler request completed 17-Sep-2024 09:49:15 | cpdn.org | Master URL changed from https://main.cpdn.org/ to https://www.climateprediction.net/ 17-Sep-2024 09:49:15 | cpdn.org | Resetting project Hello All, |

[Edit] I can see the reversion of the URL has again reset the project on my local client: Not sure whether the project was actually shut down when David sent out his message or not. On a project reset from BOINC in a VM which had not tasks to lose, a project reset came up with a transient http error trying to speak to the scheduler. |

Hmm, yes, I also got the new message: 17.09.2024 12:57:03 | cpdn.org | Master URL changed from https://main.cpdn.org/ to https://www.climateprediction.net/ 17.09.2024 12:57:08 | cpdn.org | Resetting project Followed by a small number of lines with: 17.09.2024 12:57:24 | cpdn.org | [error] Couldn't delete file projects/www.climateprediction.net/wah2_8.24_windows_intelx86.exe.gzt etc. While client was generating all the error messages, BOINC Manager was locked-up, but did come back when finished with 10 error-messages. Last night where was many more error messages, meaning chances are wasn't finished with error messages before I re-booted computer. Now, of course, the two big problems with the new master URL are: 1: At least for me if I try opening-up https://www.climateprediction.net in web-browser this open-up https://cpdn.org, not https://main.cpdn.org, and since https://cpdn.org doesn't have any scheduler you'll basically killed CPDN again. 2: For 20 years Climateprediction.net has used climateprediction.net as master URL (first with http and later https), not www.climateprediction.net. Meaning, I wouldn't be surprised if someone now get message "Master URL changed from https://climateprediction.net/ to https://www.climateprediction.net/ with following resetting of project. Note, the currently "wrong" master URL is easily seen if you open-up https://main.cpdn.org as long as you're not logged in, this currently shows "When prompted, enter: https://www.climateprediction.net/" |

Hello, In answer to the foresee question then no this was not foreseen as we were only changing the name of the server here in Oxford hving done so twice before with none of these issues. It would appear that by error the overall project name was changed, not just the server name, which has caused these issues. Andy is currently working to roll back these changes suitably to ensure that the project can be restarted and minimise impact. Kind regards David |

The definitive project name before this started was: climateprediction.net(no prefixes, no frilly bits) This is what needs to be restored if we are to have any prospect of saving work in progress. BOINC needs to read a file (the "master file") from that address, and retrieve the new scheduler address - which I believe is intended to be main.cpdn.org plus whatever gubbins is needed. Please let's keep an eye on those basic facts, and not attempt anything fancy until they're in place. Richard (running on batteries) |

Is this mess done yet, I just detached yesterday and would like to know when everything is moved and what the final ULR is going to be to reattach. |

My completed tasks all reported when I clicked on project update just now. I think I am one of the lucky ones and have not lost any work. I did have four tasks in a row that all had the failed to create process error on starting that have also reported.but they failed before the url change problems. I am not sure if all has been moved back to how it was or if the required changes have now been made without the extraneous ones? Edit: Just seen David's post so the changes wanted still need to be made. |

My tasks are still running, but the scheduler fails to connect (still goes to https://climateprediction.net). I'm also not see trickles post to the task. I think they are uploading but just not getting associated with the task when I check my All tasks for bullschuck page. What's the next step? I'm happy to sit on my hands if that's the proper position here. |

The project is down whilst they fix the issues. Just leave the tasks running and when cpdn restarts the server/scheduler, fingers crossed it'll all be fine.... --- CPDN Visiting Scientist |

These are the messages people are receiving in the BOINC notices cpdn.org: Notice from BOINC This project seems to have changed its URL. When convenient, remove the project, then add https://main.cpdn.org/ 9/16/2024 8:17:02 PM cpdn.org: Notice from BOINC This project seems to have changed its URL. Note the dates, in American format (yesterday and today, respectively). Could you let us know your time zone, and whether Daylight Saving Time is in operation? It might help the admins if they can convert them to UTC, and try to reconcile them with actions they have taken. tia. |

So UK time-8 - we're still in DST, too. I don't know for sure what the admins see on their screens, but they can work it out from there. |

I know these things can be difficult But it would have been a good idea to have sent a BIONC notice before this whole thing started. I don't come to the forums often and I Imagin there are a lot of other folks that are in the same boat, so when I saw the first message I detached and reattached to the https://main.cpdn.org/ ULR and that seemed to work but I didn't get any new WUs then when I got up this morning I saw the second notice and tried to switch back but it didn't work, so I had to find the new link to the forum to see what was going on. So I take it the https://main.cpdn.org/ ULR will be the new one after the project is back up? Will there be a BONIC notice telling us when the project is back up or do I need to keep an eye on this thread? |

A lot of comments back and forth both constructive and not so much.... Is the current advice from the Project for the Volunteers still .... hold still and do nothing while the Project Staff works on the issues ? Thanks Bill F |
