Hallo fellow members, Can somebody tell me what the best way is to update the Boinc version to the latest update, I\'m running it as a service, do I have to stop it and then update boinc or can the work still go on while updating????, maybe a stupid question but I read there are some problems after updating the program, so some good advice is welcom. Thanks in advance |

It's not stupid to check! You should definitely stop the service. First suspend and close BOINC, then stop the service, then make a copy of the whole BOINC directory as a backup. Do not attempt to detach or reset the project. When you install the new version make sure that you are installing into the same location as the original. After the install, check that BOINC has not been placed in a startup folder - you don't want that if running as a service. You will get problems if BOINC tries to run more than once, or the path is wrong. Then you can restart the service. You should find that BOINC will run and carry on with the project as usual. If it crashes, or the WU is terminated, you can stop everything and copy back the backup folder to revert to the original state. Then try another update. Most of us have had no problems, but you are clearly a cautious soul, so if there are any other precautions I have overlooked no doubt someone will add to this thread. |

Stop the service/client, then run the installer for the new version. That is normally the best way to update. If problems develop then try uninstalling and reinstalling. If that still gives you troubles then uninstall clean out the BOINC directory and reinstall.
John Keck -- BOINCing since 2002/12/08 -- |
