Hi,

i think some people want smaller work units and with the credit system it\'s not a problem with the stats!

I know lots of users want to complete full models too so why don\'t make a check box in the preferences. I think it will attract MANY people!

It\'s not for the near future but it\'s just a suggestion when you guys run out of work ;)

I read somewhere that it's just not feasible to segment the climate model.

That was already discussed in the old CPDN Forum... You know from overclockers that it depends a little bit on the CPU what you calculate. So you can't split the model in e.g 1 Modelyear WU which is calculated by several CPUs!

There's also the bandwidth issues of moving around the grid files. Since this is a 45 year run, if you do 1 year, at the end of it you have to upload all the grid files needed by the next person to initialize their model at the start of year 2, and so on. Lots of megabytes moving around.

Another concern expressed was that if you wanted to follow your run, or examine it afterward through add-on visualization software, you must have a lot of the output data (many megabytes) available on your hard drive, which wouldn't be there if you only ran a few years for one model.

There are logistical programming issues, bandwidth issues, and for some people, output visualization issues.

climate models (any) tend to generate very large diagnostic output files.
its not practical or feasible to slice the workunits into smaller chunks
as the trade off entails moving "very" large data files.
