My wish for this wish list is that the size of the workunits is halved, simply so I can finish one within a year. |

No worries! With your computer specs, you'll get there. PROVIDED: you leave the computer running for at least a large part of each day; you don't run any other cpu intensive programs for long periods (games, etc); you don't run other dc projects and give them the lion's share of cpu time; you don't have a serious comnputer failure; and perhaps a few other things I haven't thought of. And as for making the wus smaller, this has been discussed before. CP consists of over a million lines of fortran code written for, and running on, 64 bit super computers. Up until 1991, this was a Cray Y-MP C90/16. Then a pair of Cray T3Es. Late last year, a NEC SX-6 was installed. The programs they run have been 'ported to several 32 bit desktop versions, for this dc project. So you're playing with the big boys now, with big boy's toys. Patience is needed, but help is always available if you run into problems. Les |

I completely agree. When you finish such a big job, it is very satisfying. Watch the visualisations along the way to learn a bit about climate as you go, but don't leave the vis on when you're not watching it, because on boinc it slows the crunching down a lot. As you progress, you can also, if you're interested, find out more about the research project from the cpdn website and message boards. __________________________________________________ |
