On my Intel P4 HT PCs I’ve got boinc running with two model programs named hadsm3um_4.04 due to the dual nature of the hyper threading CPUs. But I also have two other processes named hadsm3_4.04 which appear to be idle in the task manager. What is hadsm3_4.04 and why have this process running with hadsm3um_4.04?

This is normal behaviour. What you have got is 2 instances of the CPDN Climate Model running and 2 instances of the visulisation software running.

There is some instructions for using the visualisation software but they are on the other forum (that I can remember). The visualisation can take a fair bit of processor power when viewing so people have found it best not to leave it running all of the time. Also, the key "0" zero toggles on or off the starfield which reduces the processor load.

CPDN actually has 3 programs:

<b>hads3um_*</b> is what's known as the worker process in BOINC terminology. It's the program that actually runs the model.

<b>hadsm3se_*</b> does the extra processing required at the end of a phase.

<b>hadsm3_*</b> is the controlling process for a workunit. It displays the visualisations and does all the interfacing with your BOINC client. There's a basic list of visualisation options <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/download_main.php#vis">here</a>.
