Hi! after first time starting (./boinc_4.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu) i got error messages, that i have to few disk space. So i edited global_prefs.xml and changed disk_max_used_gb, disk_max_used_pct and disk_min_free_gb. After restarting, i got this: 2005-01-27 15:34:00 [---] Starting BOINC client version 4.13 for i686-pc-linux-gnu 2005-01-27 15:34:00 [climateprediction.net] Project prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 2005-01-27 15:34:00 [climateprediction.net] Host ID is 92774 2005-01-27 15:34:00 [---] General prefs: from climateprediction.net (last modified 1970-01-01 01:00:00) 2005-01-27 15:34:00 [---] General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults 2005-01-27 15:34:00 [climateprediction.net] Deferring communication with project for 30 minutes and 50 seconds Question 1: Why does boinc deffer the communications now? Question 2: Why does it say: "no separate prefs for home; using your defaults"? I DO have a global_prefs.xml thanx! hal |

Q1. Not sure, in the absence of an error message, but you did amend the preferences on the account webpage as well, didn't you? What happened at the end of the deferred period? Q2. I agree that the message is unhelpful. It is because general (global) preferences are a fall back default, and BOINC searches first for an override. It is just telling you that it did not find one. |

Welcome to CPDN, Hal Q1 - you shouldn't edit the values directly in global_prefs.xml. You need to change them <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/prefs.php?subset=global">here</a>. The modification time in the messages indicate that the prefs haven't been changed, and the disk space limits you edited will be overridden by the values download from the server :( Q2 - sounds like you have your default venue set to home. The message is nothing to worry about. You can set up to 4 sets of preferences (default, home, school and work). Each host can be have its venue set to any of these, but if there are no preference settings for a venue it reverts back to the default with the message you're seeing.
