I have a work and home prefs setup on the site , ive also gone into the view computers and set which one is home/work but boinc ignores them. There are no command line options to tell boinc which to use, so how are you supposed to do it?

Welcome to the project shoof.

There's a bug in the way that BOINC handles changes to a host's venue. If you set the default venue before connecting a system to the project it'll be fine.

The only way to force the correct venue at the moment is to stop BOINC and edit the client_state.xml file in your BOINC directory. You need to add the line

<host_venue>work</host_venue>

or

<host_venue>home</host_venue>

before the last line in the file and then restart BOINC.
