Beginning last Dec my 1.4 P4 computer, running W2000 Pro, would freeze up with no error message, my screen did not go blank. After reformatting one of my disks, with 31G free space, I reinstalled Bonic 4.19 and ran hadsm3 4.04 with same result after approx. one hour. This does not occur when Bonic is not installed.

Any guess as to what might be the cause, and are there some diagnostics I could run to determine the cause of the freeze?

I had something very similar to this. I'm blaming it on the drivers for the video card. In my case, the PC froze after about 10mins which was when the screen saver would have started.

Having tried lots of things (processor tests etc) I found that the drivers for the video card were not up to date. I downloaded a new version and it has run fine ever since (I now can't stop it but that's another matter)

I would be intrested to know what you get when you run "dxdiag" and go to the video tab to see if Directx is enabled.

Hope this helps

Are you saying it ran CPDN okay until December?

Perhaps it's heat related? Is it dusty inside your computer? Have any of the ventilation fans stopped working, or perhaps aren't working as well as they should.

For diagnostic purposes:

Run SuperPI for the maximum amount of time to see if there are any errors.

Run memtest86+ to check out your memory (let it run for several hours at least).

Run Prime95 torture test for several hours to see if there are errors.

If errors crop up, cooling may be a problem for the processor, or RAM quality or RAM timings may be a problem with the memory.
