If starting the BOINC screen saver, the displays go black, and the machine becomes unresponsive, and doesn't even accept CTRL-ALT-DEL (although it still will answer to pings). I have to hit the reset button to get out of this one. If right-clicking a work unit and choosing "Show graphics", nothing happens. Correction: Nothing appears to happen, but 45 minutes later(!), a DOS window named hadsm3 appears, without content, and then Windows freezes, just like when running the screen saver. Yes, 45 minutes later. Basic machine specs: P4 3.06HT, 512MB RIMM4200 RDRAM Matrox Parhelia 512 128R gfx card, using dual head Windows 2000 pro, HT enabled Yes, the graphics card does OpenGL, and is 100% OpenGL 1.3 compliant. Instability problems like these are bad enough that I have to uninstall the client, and let my three fetched work units go to waste until they're picked up again by someone else in June. I would never use the screen saver, I set my monitor to blank after 10 mins... You should only have 2 WUs one for each HT cpu, if you are talking about CPDN WUWUs. If you want to watch the graphics just R click on the progress line of a WUWU that is being processes..... Link to Unofficial Wiki for BOINC, by Paul and Friends |

I described what happens when right-clicking the progress line of a work unit being processed, and you recommend right-clicking the progress line of a work unit that is being processed? RTFP. > > -- > *Art > Art, I just installed version 4.19 today. I connect to the SETI@Home, Predictor@Home and ClimatePredition.net projects. I've been using BOINC since 3.08, and I've had no problems with the screensaver in any of the previous versions (3.08, 3.19, 3.20, 4.09 & 4.13). However, I am now seeing pretty much the same problem as you (when the screensaver kicks in, the screen goes blank and becomes unresponsive..even to CTRL+ALT+DEL). I notice that you're running a Matrox Parhelia. I have a Matrox P750, so maybe the new BOINC version doesn't like the Matrox drivers? (I should point out, my Matrox driver is v1.07.01.060. I just checked the Matrox site and v1.08.00.133 is available, so I update my drivers and let you know if it works). [EDIT: Art, I updated my Matrox driver to v1.08.00.133; and also updated my P750 BIOS too...and it seems to have fixed the problem. I can now display the graphics by right-clicking on the work unit, or by going to the Screensaver properties and clicking Preview. Hope this helps.) Rgds, Scott. |

Unfortunately, the 1.08 drivers have a bug that limits the Parhelia 128R 4xAGP to 64MB instead of 128MB, so that's really not an option. I guess I'll postpone reinstalling BOINC until new Matrox drivers come out. |

There is many of us who do not view the model with the built in viewer/screen saver as it can consume a fair amout of your processing power. There is also some other visualisation software available on the site in the FAQ or under "Getting Started" that may work instead. Aother trick some of us found was rolling back to a previous video driver version that worked before the update. Above all thanks for your interest, welcome abord and hope that you manage to find and equitable solution. |

I just experienced the same problem, but here is the weird part: I've been using the viewer and screensaved throughout this work unit, and even after I upgraded to BOINC 4.19 it continued to work until tonight. I right clicked and selected show graphics and the window opened but remained blank. After several minutes I clicked the x to close the window and got spammed with those annoying Error Report boxes that Mr. Gates and Company were so 'helpful' to build into Windows. I was finally able to get through all the error notifications and windows started working again, but BOINC reported a calculation error and downloaded a new work unit, so there went 180 hours of work down the tubes. I guess if need be I can go without watching the graphics, but I find them really relaxing sometimes. Any insight into how to prevent this problem in the future would be helpful! |

You might want to update your video card drivers to the latest if you haven't already. May not help...but it might. |

Thanks for the suggestion, but I keep everything up to date. The only thing I have installed since the last time I used the viewer was Diable I&2 and the expansion packs, which shouldnt affect BOINC in any way. If I have another problem I will try uninstalling them, but the new work unit that I downloaded has worked just fine with the viewer thus far. Maybe it was just a freak coincidence and I tried to open the viewer right when BOINC hit a problem with that particular work unit. I dunno, I cant think of an explanation. If nothing else I will just blame windows and go on with life :-p |
