Abox, P4 2.8 GHz, SuSE 9.0 (kernel update by YaST yesterday), choked on my ISPs flaky service last night. (Frequent connection problems and slow transfers in recent days.)

Nothing unusual in the log other than -113 errors (not uncommon at Trickle time the past few days!). Then, Monitor requested shutdown; apparently when/after uploading a Trickle.

Re-start proceeded without incident.

A check of Trickles for that machine's two Models showed a duplicate entry (except that the second entry has five additional seconds of time) for Result #285 at 15/1410Z.

I am rather new to cp but when I upgraded my SuSE 9.1 kernel seti@home BOINC considered I had another computer! Neither BOINC is able to see any swap space (I have more than 500 MB) and while seti@home BOINC (3.20) correctly sees the 512 KB of my Pentium II L2 cache cp BOINC credits it with more than 976 KB! Also the average credit rating is higher on cp BOINC than it was on seti@home BOINC, but this may be due to the latter's frequent outtime, which caused me to abandon that project.

Re SuSE 9.1,

I 'upgraded' my Bbox (P4, 3.0) from SuSE 9.0 Personal to 9.1 Pro. Big problem! 9.1 refused to recognize the second virtual half of the HT CPU. That was merely the most serious issue among a potful of issues. Then I did a 'new install' of 9.1 --> same problems. (SuSE "Support" wasn't much help, either. [Perhaps the staff is bitter re. the Novell take-over of SuSE.]) I retrograded to 9.0, losing all email and the address book in the process because the backup copied the file structure but not the files! (One would think that the 9.1 release was done by M$!)

There are many complaints about 9.1 across the 'net.

I switched to SuSE (from Caldera openLinux) with release 7.1; the 9.1 purchase (now gathering dust) is the last of SuSE for me. Probably go to Mandrake.


I hope you stay with CP and enjoy the experience. (It should get interesting once the start-up issues are behind us and people look more closely at what the Models produce. That was, and is, true of 'classic' CPDN.)

Re SuSE: I have been using 6.4 found in a magazine, after Slackware, Unifix and Corel.When it became obsolete, some friend of mine gave me a professional SuSE 7.3, using which I downloaded an ISO image of 9.1. Then my biggest disk broke and I installed 9.1 on it. So I have three OSes, a WIN98SE, a SuSE 6.4 Linux and a 9.1 Linux, which I boot using GRUB. I like the SuSE on line database and so far had no problem with it. Of course my hardware is very simple and rather old, but 9.1 recognizes all my appliances, including a HP710C GDI printer, a HP2100C scanner, a US Robotics modem, an Ericsson ADSL ethernet modem so I cannot really complain since I paid nothing for it.
