Hi, My PC; Home Brew Win XP Home SP2. AMD Athlon 2800+ Thoroughbred 2.5gHz Fsb 333. 1GB Ram 80Gb Hdd. On a ASROCK K7S8XE Mobo. Crunching 2f77_200134156 using hadsm3 v4.04. my pc crashed and reported a error with BOINC. This has never happened before. I also crunch Seti@home and Einstein@home with no problems. It only happens when I crunch your wu's. Anyone else had this problem or am I alone with this one???? |

Hi and welcome. Since you have hidden your computers and there are no trickles, we haven't much to go on. Can you post what exit status the crashed models have and/or post anything that may look relevant from stderr_um.txt files. Climateprediction is very intensive and tends to cause errors well before other programs appear to have problems except perhaps for programs that are deliberately designed to stress the computer. <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=2026">This thread</a> gives links to some testing pograms. Unfortunately, you are not alone see for example <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1103">this thread.</a> Visit BOINC WIKI for help And join BOINC Synergy for all the news in one place. |

Hi Brian, None of the following is casting aspersions on your home build efforts ... CPDN stresses memory and hard disk more than any other application you're likely to be running on your system, so there's more chance of hitting problems when it's running. If your HD is self-diagnosing it's worth checking the event log to see if there are any warnings that it's about to fail. I'd also advise trying the hardware checks suggested by UK_Nick on the phpBB forum, but unfortunately that's unavailable at the moment. The links would normally be <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2126">here</a> and <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2124">here</a>, but here's a few pointers from memory. Is your system overclocked? (There's a specific warning about overclocking <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/tech_faq_boinc.php">here</a>). Apart from overclocking, the other likely reasons are overheating (ventilation, heat sink or dust) or a PSU that can't give stable voltages under full CPU load. You could try running the following tests to check out your hardware. <a href="http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm">GIMPS Prime95 torture test</a> <a href="http://www.memtest86.com/">Memtest86</a> <a href="http://www.geocities.com/hjsmithh/Pi/Super_Pi.html">SuperPi</a> [Edit] crandles got his post in as I was writing this one :) "The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children." - Dietrich Bonhoeffer |

I'm sure it's something with the Intel compiler and the AMD CPU. Everything on my end works and passes all testing. My computer freezes though. <a href="http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=11460&t=79"><img src="http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/88x31/get.gif"></img></a> |

My computer freezes though. > If it is the Intel compiler and AMD CPU, then why are so many AMD users running error free? Running a 2800+ at 2.5 GHz is a large overclock. You shouldn't be surprised if it crashes, as Thyme said, CPDN is not like other DC projects in that it stresses the CPU and especially memory much more. When you say everything on your end works and passes all testing, what do you mean? You certainly didn't have time from the time crandles or Thyme posted to run the tests for any length of time. I would suggest at least 8 hours of memtest86+ and at least 8 hours of Prime95 without errors at the overclocked speed. Even then, that would not guarantee stability under CPDN, better 12 hours of each. I would also suggest running CPDN at spec, or a lower overclock for awhile and seeing if that is stable. |

I don't overclock. My temp is usually around ~42 C. It seems CPDN just doesn't like my computer :( But I'll run some testing and leave it running overnight. <a href="http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=11460&t=79"><img src="http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/88x31/get.gif"></img></a> |

"AMD Athlon 2800+ Thoroughbred 2.5gHz" It should run at ~2.08 GHz. |

Yeah I'm a different poster. lol I've just had similar problems w/ CPDN like freezing and errors. <a href="http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=11460&t=79"><img src="http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/88x31/get.gif"></img></a> |

I made a typing error on the amd Athlon XP speed. The following is the correct id for my CPU: AMD Athlon XP Core: Thoroughbred B CPU Model: 8 Performance Rating: 2800+ Working Frequency: 2.25gHz Package Type: OPGA Operating Voltage: 1.65v Operating Temp (Max): 85%c L1:128KB L2:256KB Multiplier: 13.5 FSB 333mHz Stepping Code: NIUGB Manufactured: 2003 Week: 35 (25 August 2003) Production Batch: M Production: #1048 Laser Marker ID: 28 Process Technology: 0.12u So accorrding to my knowledge it's not overclocked for this Asrock mobo. my apologies for the original mistake. Funny it does not happen to any other program except crunchin units on climateprediction.net. HYowever I'm going to try lowering the Multiplier to 12 and see if that cures it. I'll let u know the outcome. Quote: "If it aint' broke dont fix it" "If it works ok don't update it (BIOS)" Thanks again for your help guys. Kind regards, Brian. |

Hi, After much checking and testing my problem seems to be too high a tempature. I have withdrawn from the project until I can update my cooling on this PC. The error which crashed the PC frequently was the STOP: 0x0000009C error, Microsoft Article ID: 329284. Some extra cooling fans are planned soon. I can not have my PC crashing out so I will restart after the fans are in. My thanks to everyone who helped me with some very useful information. |

Heck I've had mine running at 40C and it still frooze. lol I have a exhaust fan, a good Thermaltake (<a href="http://www.tr2tt.com/products/coolers/m2.htm">http://www.tr2tt.com/products/coolers/m2.htm</a>) cpu fan, and a temperature sensitive Asus fan intake. All stable otherwise. CPDN just doesn't work. I'll try it again though. (Maybe with 4.2x?) I've never had a blue screen, just freezing.. More testing...... :( <a href="http://www.spreadfirefox.com/?q=affiliates&id=11460&t=79"><img src="http://sfx-images.mozilla.org/affiliates/Buttons/88x31/get.gif"></img></a> |
