Windows XP sp2 (FW disabled); 4.19 of BOINC and the climateprediction project; plenty of disk space (over 20Gb). How do I fix this (stopping and starting didn't work) |

There is some advice <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=1733">here</a>. If this doesn't help, ask again. |

Tried starting as service, which "succeeded" but now I can't run the GUI and the screensaver doesn't display complaining about a protection/security issue in the screensaver (the password protect box was NOT checked). Tried the service option on an einstein project that was working and now I get the "password protection"-like message instead of the screen saver and a "failed to cleanup the Windows SOcket Interface" on invoking the GUI. The einstein screensaver is cool and the projects look worthy but this seems a tad demanding from a technical perspective. Even the account process seems a little much compared to the original SETI project. |

BOINC is very different from the original SETI program. It is designed to be multi-project, and has additional security and other enhancements which account for the complications. It seems as though the disk space problems have solved themselves. But the absence of a GUI under the BOINC service is a feature of the current public release - a solution for now is BoincView available from the Add-ins page of the menu. I don't recommend running BOINC as a screensaver despite the default option. It takes a lot of processing power in CPDN and adds further complications. It is better to run the viz when you want it. The message about failing to clean up the sockets interface is because your system is trying to load BOINC twice. Remove it from your startup folder if running as a service. |
