Complete error message: ____________________ hadsm3_4.12_windows.intelx86.exe - Bad image The application or dll C:\Windows\System32\DDRAW.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette. ____________________ Errors usually happen at night when I do not use computer for other tasks. At day time I can do whatever I want - work, movies, even games - all on top of BOINC, and nothing can harm it. I run 4 other projects and they all run rock solid. CPDN too... well, until night. I have never had any problem like this with other projects. AMD AthlonXP 2500+ 768 RAM ATI Radeon 9600XT At least 5 GB of free hard disk space Windows XP, SP2 Didzis |

Graphics + ATI = problems. There is appearently a problem with some of ATIs drivers and openGL. This can cause workunits to abort when showing graphics. Most affected projects are CPDN and E@H but I think all of them are to a lesser degree. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |

It's an obvious point, but as you say you don't have a problem when using the computer, why not turn off the BOINC screensaver? It's a good idea anyway, as it consumes processing power that could be put to better use. It's a pity not to be able to view the graphics at all, but it is a BOINC issue, as John has explained, and people are working on it. |

I do not use BOINC screensaver. Standard XP screensaver is good enough. This means that I do not look at any project graphics. Still there may be some truth in your words. After all, night is (almost) the only time when screensaver works. I will turn it off. Another interesting effect - off topic, but may be ralated: After upgrading to Windows XP SP2 yesterday, I noticed that Internet becomes slower and slower, until it died completely. Some "bottleneck"-like effect. Restarting computer helped for some minutes, not more. My ISP could not explain nor solve this problem. I deinstalled the SP2 and my Internet problem was gone! SP2 was, maybe, the cause of other problems too. Didzis Latest info: I have found what the problem was with SP2 and my DSL Internet: See http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html#Internet On Page 8, there is SP2 TCP Slowdown Fix - ;-) |

I have got a new theory: That may be Netdimes application (see http://www.netdimes.org) - if it finishes its wu and unsuccessfully tries to exchange data with its server, it keeps trying and gets some erors. If CPDN happens to be running at the same time, CPDN goes down. Last night I left CPDN running alone, other projects suspended. It genereted this "bad image error" again. When I examined Netdimes application, there were something about java errors (sorry, I did not save this information). I decided to deinstall the Dimes, but system was so low in graphical resources that I could not even open Control Panel... To verify this theory, I am (temporary) out of Netdimes project. This CPDN is like a game - "Plant Tycoon" for PDA comes to mind. One has to provide right "plant food" at a right time, fight "plant pests" and do many other things to keep it runing as required. I would prefer another mode - set it and forget it. Didzis |
