I run Climate Prediction and Einstein. Previously resource shares were 160 : 40, but the CP web site now shows that its resource share is 1, and all attempts to change it over the last 24 hours have failed (using both IE and Firefox, in case it was a browser problem). I update the figure, press the update button, and am eventually returned to the preferences page, but the value shown does not change. Further, I do not get the message saying that my preferences have been changed, and will be updated next time I connect to the project etc.

Perhaps this is because the CP people want to slow down the return of data from the field, but if not, is there a problem somewhere?

Which version of BOINC are you using?

I'm not sure why my BOINC version would affect my ability to change values which are presumably held on a central server, and which I access through a web browser, but the version is Boinc 4.19

BOINC isn't quite like that. There isn't a single master computer running everything, and whilst UC Berkeley might like to rule the world they may be grateful not to have that responsibility, given the server problems they have had over the past months. :)

It isn't intuitively obvious, but although you set your preferences on a server attached to one of the projects, the BOINC client on your computer then picks them up when it next communicates with that server and applies them itself in your client_state.xml file of the BOINC folder. You can even alter that yourself with care, though there is not much point if BOINC is interpreting your preferences from the website differently and changing them back, and making a mistake and corrupting the file can be disastrous for the WUs you are running.

Some people have been reporting odd behaviour from the latest versions of BOINC, but 4.19 has been around a little while. My suggestion would be to:

1. have another go at inserting the preference settings on each project website if you have not done so recently. It is just possible that one became corrupted to a silly figure;

2. try an upgrade to the latest public version from the Berkeley BOINC site. You will need to uninstall 4.19, but that will not wipe your current WUs and as long as you install the new version into the same folder you should be able to carry on. But take a backup of the whole folder first.

3. just closing BOINC and restarting, or even rebooting the PC, seems to untangle BOINC when it gets into a mess sometimes.

Andrew,

As suggested, I have updated to Boinc 4.25 (I can't say that it is an improvement though)

I then connected to the CP project, and discovered that I could now change my CP preferences from the previous share of 1 unit of work to a larger value.

I still can't see how the Boinc version on my PC has affected this, but the end result is what I wanted, so I will be thankful for small mercies.

THank you for your advice on this matter.

Simple. Earlier versions of BOINC often didn't remember resource share.
This was fixed in version 4.25. Hence the question about versions.
