Hi,

I just had a spectacular crash with both these programs running.

Both were tagged 'not responding' in Win98SE.

I'll try to keep them apart, and see how things develop.

Anyone else having these issues?

Hi,

Well, I sort of got my answer.

I'm told the BOINC climate prediction software was written to optimize for Pentium processors. Unfortunately, my system is not qualified, and I, along with anyone else that was willing to participate and didn't know this, either tolerates the errors and crashes, or is forced to opt into another project.

With nothing other than my virus software and BOINC running, I got the 'blue screen of death' last night.

I wonder how long it'll be before I choose another option.
I do appreciate, however, the prompt and candid response.

Ralph,
The program was originally written for a 64bit supercomputer, over 20 or more years. The version running
on desktops is the same thing, with a few mods to get it to work on them. Just because the programmers
used a compiler from Intel for this, doesn't mean that AMD processors don't work.
Lots of people use them with success. And there are people with Intel processors who have problems.
Some other recent problems are with BOINC not working with ATI cards. Other people have hardware problems.

One user was complaining about not being able to get CP to run, and that he was leaving if no one could help,
and after a lot of posts by several people, he found that his cpu heatsink was covered with dust.
After cleaning the computer, it worked fine.

See <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2124"> this</a> thread, and also <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2126"> this</a> one for advice.

Are you using the latest version of GetRight? I've heard some earlier versions were problematic.

AMD+CPDN does not equal instability, despite what some people tell you. Yes, CPDN is compiled with the Intel Fortran compiler and is optimized for Intel processors. This does not mean AMD=instability. I had an AthlonXP 3000+ running WinME that completed its first 5 consecutive runs without a problem. I also have two Athlon64s that have a 10 to 1 completion to error ratio.

However, the latest version of the CPDN application (4.12 hadsm*.exe) is apparently unstable with Win98/ME. I have no idea if this is what is causing your troubles, but it may be.

For what it's worth, I have run CPDN with three different AMD processors and haven't experienced the errors and crashes you speak of. I also use GetRight, and have for years. I have seen no problems with CPDN and GetRight running at the same time. I am however, running WinXP Pro.

I finally found the thread I was looking for. The relevant posts were in the middle of a VERY long thread about the classic forum being down.

I've extraceted 3 posts from this:

Hi everybody on this forum. first I want to say SORRY for my written english( I never learned it at school), just a some years of being in USA. It probably will be chaotic. But I hope you will get my point. I don`t know a bit about this project, its not my interest to know.
But, I have my comp. turned ON for a long time and i think it might be a good reson
to use it in this project "BOINC-something", just want to contribute this time in this proj. The old "Board"- I don`t even know how it looks, I Signed to this proj. some time in Jan/`05. it was allready down. My problem is: usualy twice a week my computer hangs out since I run BOINC client. Nothing works at this time: mouse ,
keyboard. The only thing i can do is press the RESET buton. Also , when I check the status of my account and the results of job done by my comp. I can only see " client error". I have some questions and I do expect some anwers.
1. does it make a sens to continue?
2.is there any solution to fix that?
3. is there any other way to avoid this problem?
a) suspennd internet activity?
b)send the computed data by (I don`t know) other way? e-mail, other messanger type client to your web.?
c)or just give up? or maybe there is something else?
LET ME KNOW, PLEASE
I will wait two more weeks for an answer. After that I will giveup. if I don`t get the answer. I would not want to. But I must be sure , it make a sens to continue.

Looking at your Results page, all the crashes were "-5 error". This a a general error message covering a lot
of problems. As you don't want to get technical, I'd suggest that you just continue.
Your current model is progressing OK. So far!

Your questions:
1) Yes, it does make sense. Some people have a lot of crashes, but also some successful runs.
2) There are some programs that will test your computer. See Arnoud's reply.
3a) You can if you wish: Go to File on the BOINC gui, and 'tick' Disable BOINC network access.
'Untick' it to allow trickles to go through.
3b) Not possible. And the crashes are happening in your computer, not during sending.
3c) 1) I hope that you don't.
3c) 2) Yes. There is still the original form of CPDN, usually called Classic CPDN.
A lot of people are still running this version, some due to problems with the BOINC version.
For the moment, I suggest that you wait and see if it crashes again. It might not!

Over to you Mo, and /or others who know how to run Classic.

Honza, Arnaud, Les Bayliss, Beezlebub.
OK Im back.
Les, I will keep going wit this project, not sure about "error 5" but will see.
First, I want to ThankYou all for your advises. I am pretty sure hmm, even very sure that, it was my fault.I am lazy. I run all the Arnaud`s tests.
memtest86-ok, no problems
superPi-ok no problems
Prime95-yes, problem. run along with Motherboard Monitor Program:
Temperature 75C , computer freezes after 3 min of runing test.
I looked inside my box and.... . 3 months ago i burned power suply while doing
several operations on my comp. I instald second taken from other computer and left
side panel not instaled. Better ventilation but, it gets dusty several times faster. When i bent my neck and looked inside WOW... . Disconected, removed all fans for cleaning-vacuuming, heatsink coverd in 3/4 (area under fan), vacuumed all parts-hardware.
I instaled new power suply, 600W, droped everything back into the box, switched power ON and run Prime95 test again for 8 hours. After that time - no errors, no warnings. Temperature between 58C-61C. It`s done, well done. Today morning I restarted Boinc and will keep it going. Thanks again,
ZippO

Finally, if you look at ZippO's account page <a href="http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/show_host_detail.php?hostid=91112"> here,</a> you'll see that he's running an AMD,
and if you look at the trickles for his current model, it has been running since he fixed his machine.

Hello,

I stand corrected.

My system had been stable for a number of months, even though I add and remove software regularly - until recently. No other program has even caused even a blink, again, until recently.

I've had no 'hardware hangs' since the last blackout, and that was 2 years ago.
As I said, I'm due for an upgrade.
I've some experience in home computer maintenance, having worked with Compaq for a couple years. I wouldn't recommend most of what I scanned in the posted links to any but very experienced technicians. Even with some knowledge of it, I don't believe one should push any system to its limits. Almost none are designed for it.

I suppose I'll bash away at it until the next crash.

bowing out,
Ralph

Hi,

I give up - between the program errors and the software crashes, it takes too much to nurse it along.

Since I am interested, I'll check back if the program is updated to work with common hardware and software.

Hi,

Amazing! I opted out of the climate prediction project, and my system is not only stable again, but so stable it's boring.

If anyone ever reports an update or more stability, I'll be happy to rejoin.

'Guess I'll go over to the Einstein project; I've heard good reviews there.
