hi,
because of errors i backed up my project folder of cpdn(using boinc; before the errors)
I had no communiction with the servers.
Well, I have done a reset of cpdn and tried to use my backup of the projects folder.
But boinc says ther is insufficient work and downloaded a new wu.
So how can i use my old correct wus?

Unfortunately backing up the project folder is not enough. There is some needed information in xml files and also slots folder. A backup of the whole BOINC folder can be restored by simply copying it back.

If you are running other projects as well, this will mean these projects going back to the time of the backup. So it is a bit problematic with other projects running.

Is there any chance of continue computing the started WUs?

Do you have a project_name.xml file which is not stored in the project folder?

If not, the server will reject any attempt to upload information.

Not to hijack this thread but I had a motherboard and power supply lose their smoke over the weekend. The hard disk was temporarily moved into a loaner PC. All BOINC projects except climate prediction continued without a problem but climate prediction downloaded a new model. BOINC manager shows no trace of the existing work unit. I am not sure exactly what it didn't like about the existing model. I suspect there where several reboots before I got the PC back.

This is on a windows (XP pro) system.

In the www.climateprediction.net folder I have both a "workunit name" folder and a corresponding "workunit name".xml file. Is there any way I can add this work unit back into BOINC?

Hi Jim
Commiserations on getting so close to finishing before the crash.

There is also a client_state.xml in the BOINC folder, and 2 'slots' folders under BOINC which are needed.

The client_state.xml file contains the names of the models that BOINC knows about, so you'll have to have a copy that contains the old model name.
The data MAY be in the client_state_old.xml, but if BOINC has had several re-starts, I doubt it.
The files in the 2 slots folders need to be the ones associated with the 2 lost models.
The best way to get it all back is from a backup of the entire BOINC folder and it's sub-sets.

If you have all this info somewhere, post again, and someone will be along to advise further.

Les

Les,
Thanks for the input. After I made my posting I did some more investigating and the other BOINC projects didn't restart as I first thought. It looks like everything that was running at the time of the "loss of smoke" is gone. The reason I thought the other projects were alright is there isn't any trace of the files from the other projects. Climate prediction left the old folder when it moved on. I suspect the problem is related to the specific CPU in the loaner PC. It is not the same as the one in my old PC. I did BOINC detect the change in CPU and trashed all work units that had gotten started? The bad news is the replacement mother board and power supply are being installed tomorrow which means I might lose the work units that got down loaded today.
