Hello! I discovered a bad problem with climateprediction. Since the BOINC client has a new interface since v4.25 all models of cp are crashing after some hours of rendering and the result is lost. In addition the whole BOINC client can crash and other work units of other projects are lost. I don't know why this is happening, maybe the application needs a bugfixing, but I can't continue with the project until this is corrected. Maybe I'm not the only one with this problem. Is there somebody who knows if there's a way to clean up with this problem? Thanx for all answers. Life is Science, and Science rules. The latest recommended version of BOINC is 4.43. You could try an upgrade to that and see if it helps. If not, you could go back to the old BOINC GUI, 4.19, which is still available. That would at least enable you to pin down what is going wrong. It is just possible that the problem is caused by something else, not the BOINC version. Your problem could be caused by hardware problems, such as flakey memory or overheating, or else by something like a software conflict. For example, what antivirus software are you running? There is advice here on hardware, and here on software incompatibilites. |

Also, are you trying to view graphics? If so, are you using an ATI Radeon card? Problems have occurred with BOINC versions > 4.19 and Radeons with recent drivers. Hmmm...you're crashing with the -2 error. This error is relatively infrequent, and no one has been able to figure out the cause to my knowledge. |

Thanx for the advices from both of you but I'm sorry, they aren't really helpful at all. Sorry, but I had forgot to describe my computer situation a little bit more, but to your answers I can say: 1. I've updated my BOINC client a few days ago to v4.43. After the crashes I hoped the new version would be a little more stable with cp, but after 6 hours of rendering the whole client crashes again and except for one wu of SETI the other results were lost again. I'm not sure but it seems the problem is caused by the switching of the tasks after the work period, e.g. from cp to seti or cp to einstein. 2. My computer configuration was the same at all time (no bad memory or overheated processors) as it was when I switched to BOINC v4.25 with the new interface. Because of this it can't be a hard- or software problem at all, it really works fine 'til this time. 3. I'm not using ATI Radeon, it's a Geforce NVIDIA 5200. The graphic works fine. The only program I use is the SpyBot, but it is not resident, I only run it once a month or so. I don't think that this program could cause the crash if it's not resident? 4. I forgot something more interesting. If the whole BOINC client crashes by cp running, some of my Windows XP-functions are degenerating to Windows 2000! Surface and messages appear in another form, and I have to restart to get XP back to normal. This is really weird. 5. I don't really want to switch back to v4.19 or less, the new BOINC client is lovely and has a good user interface. Life is Science, and Science rules. The bit that I havn't tried is shareing with, say, setiathome. I intend to run 4.43 for another week to ensure there is no problems and then and then will try shareing with setiathome. |

As this does look like BOINC itself rather than the application that is causing the crash, you might try posting on the SETI@home site as that deals with BOINC issues as well. At least you might find others with the same experience to sympathise with you. Unfortunately, these machine specific problems can be a real pain to track down and I don't offer much hope other than to wait for a new version. But do not rule out the possibility that there is some software conflict. For example, some people have had trouble with the software used to play CDs/DVDs that many computers have installed. Most people have some resident programs if you look at Task Manager. |

Did you uninstall the earlier version before installing 4.25? This was required; you cannot "upgrade" from 4.19 to 4.25. |

Hm, it seems, for my problem there is no satisfiable solution. This evening it happened again with two cp wu's, after I had removed Spybot. It was only an attempt, but it will be the one and only. It's hopeless to check out the real cause, I didn't know that much from the whole application. I'm not changing to another BOINC client which maybe lower, because all other BOINC projects wouldn't allow this. The only thing I can try now is to switch to the classic cp project. Can someone tell me if there are credits too and will they be added to the existing BOINC credits? Thanx for all. Life is Science, and Science rules. Classic is pre-BOINC, and the credits are different, and not added to BOINC credits. To run other projects, which you hint at doing, you would have to run both Classic and BOINC at the same time, which I don't think can be done without YOU doing some switching between versions. Spybot should not be a problem, as long as you don't run the resident part. Les |
