Now I get (reached daily quota of 2 results).... Is it gonna take 24hrs before I get another work unit? Yes im using dialup. Hade to reinstall Windows Xp Home and BOINC.

I'm also using dialup. I have the phone line plugged into the input socket of a surge surpressor board, and the computer and phone plugged into the two outlet sockets.
In BOINC, I have 'Disable dialup network access' ticked until such time as I'm ready to allow a login. When I want to make a phone call, I just pick up the phone and dial. No suspension needed.

The daily quota is to prevent computers downloading a model, crashing it, and then getting another, etc.
This prevents computers with a problem from quickly draining the data set pool.

The phone call bit confused me as well but then I realised:

The problem seems to be with downloading the application. Checking your firewall setting would be a good place to start (esp after reinstalling windows).

(You may also want to try and merge some of the computer identities.)

Hi Michael

You don't need to be connected to the internet all, or even most of the time, to run a cpdn model. You don't need to connect every day, so you are allowed to make as many long phone calls as you want and whenever you want!

But you do need to leave your computer on and running, though it saves electricity and expense if you turn the monitor off.

You only usually need to suspend then exit the model when you actually want to turn the machine off. It's best to suspend-exit slowly, as the model can take a few seconds to exit cleanly. Otherwise, just leave the model running, even when you're off the internet.

Some people only turn their machine off when they go to bed, or when they leave the house, or when they go away on holiday. But most people with dial-up are only connected to the internet when they are actively using the computer.

Hope that helps and saves your social life!

Isn't it more "Disable BOINC network access" rather than "Run based on preferences" that you would need before you unplug the phone line?
