In another thread, I have discussed the lack of trickles - as expected, this has sorted itself out. My RAC has not changed though for ages, despite submitting a complete wu, and being off the air for 4 days with a burnt power supply. I have the same RAC I have had for a week or more now. I point this out as a possible symptom of something.
-------------
Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

|

The Trickle issue is sorted out (but certainly not by itself). RAC and other credit related is not updating and this affects all users, but this info is not vital for running your model. N.B. My personal view on credits is that they can drop the whole accounting stuff, but I will respect it if your have a different opinion on that. |

RAC has not worked properly in CPDN for some time. There can be errors in allocating credit at the end of a run which are then corrected within hours, but RAC cannot be corrected in this way. So if you do care about the statistics it is best to concentrate on credits alone. Although there have been problems recently with credit allocation, generally speaking CPDN's way of giving credits works well. I understand that there may sometimes be problems with RAC in other projects as well. |

This also helps the development of the client software, so the dev's know that the software is working correctly. 2) allow for a degree of "competitiveness" (in the stats tables) which means that team memberships can be built up and hence to attract more members and so help further the cause of each project. Personally, I think you should only be awarded "credits" once you join a team...! Timbo |

Quote: 1) allow crunchers to see that their particular projects are being crunched successfully and that useful info is being returned (there's nothing like joining a project only to find that the resource you provide is being totally wasted). This also helps the development of the client software, so the dev's know that the software is working correctly. This project is different to the others in that it has "partial completion indicators" called trickles. These are a good indication that a model is progressing, and are also used for this purpose by the server software for the same reason. If it hasen't received a trickle after a certain period of time, it assumes that the model has failed, and reallocates the parameter set to another host. Also, because of the way BOINC works, it occassionally gives some hosts extra credit on model completion. The only reliable way found to get around this is to run a program every 4 hours or so to recalc the credits. This isn't done for RAC because of the complex way that RAC is calculated, so that RAC is a useless figure on this project. And right now, the computer people have more important things to do, such as getting the server software working. |

Computing time contributed by a single user on a lone machine is ever bit as valuable and valid as computer time from a team. I was under the impression that credits are given as a "reward" for people letting these BOINC projects use their computers. |

But, for some crunchers, it's *only* about being awarded credits and not much else. So, I would imagine that if a project gave more credits per unit of time crunched, then that project would probably draw more of the "credits" type of cruncher to it, compared say to someone who crunched a particular project because they wanted to help *that* specific project. And the credits *are* as good a "reward" as one's ever going to get other than faint personal "smugness" you get from knowing that you've helped. Hence why I thought that if the projects could generate more public interest by ensuring that people are part of a team, then that in itself would perhaps bring a greater collective together to help the projects. That's not to take anything away from the lone crunchers (hell, if they wanted to they could create their own teams..!) |

Credits, and RAC are part and parcel of the BOINC set up. If teams, and team sites are going to rank their members on RAC, then projects that don't provide RAC are going to be shunned by crunchers that seek the prestige of crunching "most". CPDN is at liberty to offer credit or withold it from their volunteers as they see fit. Their crunchers have exactly the same freedom, to give or not.
-------------
Wave upon wave of demented avengers march cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream.

|
