Message 14184 - Posted: 7 Jul 2005, 3:42:39 UTC

Hi everyone.
I\'m sure this has been asked before, but I couldn\'t find an adequate answer, so...

I\'m running the ClimatePrediction project, 4.12 by the looks of it (hadsm3 4.12)... I seemed to have trouble at first, trying to run work units with it (they would receive computation errors shortly after starting), but the latest one, I thought was running just fine. It was even up past 10% completion, so, I thought things were okay.

But, I noticed today, that the work unit got a \"computation error\". Why does this happen? It\'s kind of frustrating, as that work is lost now, and Boinc simply downloads a new Climate Prediction work-unit to start on, from scratch again.

What causes this? I\'m running a Windows XP machine (Celeron 2.6GHz) (with Service pack 2 installed).

I also run Seti under Boinc, and I never have problems like that. I might have server related problems with Seti, but I have never had actual work-units crap out with computation errors.

Any info?

Lots of info. And lots of help from fellow crunchers if you need it.
SETI et al is like walking to your mail box.
CPDN is like a cross country marathon. Very computationally intense.
So: is your computer up to the task?

See <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2124"> here<a> for basic maintainence,
and <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2126"> here</a> for some performance tests.
And don't worry: you are not alone in having the two errors you got, so let's see if we can dig you out of the hole.

If you need more advice after running the tests, someone is always around.

Message 14218 - Posted: 8 Jul 2005, 23:42:46 UTC - in response to Message 14186.

Well, I've been running the Prime95 torture test, non-stop for the last 24 hours (and using my computer as usual, at the same time). No errors or problems with the Prime95 testing. My computer is slow of course, with all this stuff running, but Prime95 has no complaints.

So, I'm not sure why I get the computation errors with ClimatePrediction. I think I will stop the Prime95 torture test, within the next hour or so, and continue crunching the ClimatePrediction and Seti workunits again. I'll see how far this new ClimatePrediction workunit goes, and if it also gets a computation error, then I will just continue using SETI.

Message Type: Error Message

This Message means that the BOINC Client Software, Science Application, or Operating System encountered a severe error. It should be noted that these errors may not indicate a specific problem with the software, but may be the result of a confluence of stray interactions that produces, um, a negative effect.

These messages are called "Stop" messages for Microsoft Windows®. The messages and common ways to determine what and why these error are happening are in a Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php).

Common causes of these errors can be:

Over stressed hardware, usually by heat.
Flaky, or bad device drivers.
An actual problem (Bug) in the BOINC Client Software, Science Application, or Operating System.
A bad Work Unit (usually a rare occurrence).
These errors have been sighted in all BOINC Powered Projects, so, the examples are merely typical occurrences.

Note:
Even though the "death" seems to point to one application or another, there is no telling from this message where the error really occurred. The error usually points at the Science Application but may well be something like a device driver.

None.

[edit]Exit Code -1073741819 (0xc0000005))
This is occurring a lot on Phase changes in Climateprediction.net. Often occurs after the usual Microsoft Windows® message that "Hadsm has crashed do you want to report it to Microsoft?". It is well worth trying to bring up the BOINC Daemon and exit it BEFORE clicking 'Don't Sent'. It might be wise to take a backup to a different from normal location. Starting the BOINC Client Software again will often allow it continue without error.

Line-By-Line Explanation
Restarting result '(result)' using '(science-application)' version '(version)'
And now it has restarted processing. There is little difference between "Resuming" and "Restarting", "Resuming" occurs if the Result's information is still resident in memory and the "Restarting" indicates a reload of the in-progress information.
Unrecoverable error for result '(result)' ( - exit code -'(number)' ('(hex-number)'))
There was a severe error in the processing this Result and we had a "death" type ending to the Science Application.
request_reschedule_cpus: process exited
Need to start up a new Result for the CPU.
Deferring communication with project for "x" hours, "y" minutes, and "z" seconds
This message indicates that we will use Exponential Back-Off to calculate a time interval to wait before attempting to make another try to upload the file to the Project's Data Server.

This is a Microsoft Windows® "stop" error. This specific error is most likely related to an error initializing a Dynamic Link Library.
