BOINC 4.19
MSXPSP2
ATI Radeon 7000 Driver 6.14.10.6517
I run SETI and CPDN.

About 3 weeks ago CPDN added 5 or so files to my system: globe.rgb, and others I don\'t recall. Since then, CPDN shows the globe, colors, etc. but also shows the bouncing BOINC \'B\' ball while indicating \'BOINC can\'t show graphics\' all the while freezing my machine for a few seconds while it cycles between CPDN and the bouncing ball. The bouncing ball erases the parts of the globe it bounces through before it goes back to the normal CPDN globe and then starts all over again. The process taking no more than about 5 seconds. BUT, it freezes my machine during 3 of those seconds. Trying to come out of it is even more annoying because the mouse is only active for 2 seconds.

I apologize to all the folks who put the work units together, but some have been downloaded and deleted as part of this problem.

Thanks for your help.

you may want to try to upgrade your BOINC client to the latest official version (4.45), I think earlier ones may have had a problem with switching the tasks & graphics.

But it is recommended to uninstall 4.19 first before installing 4.45. Usually a direct upgrade is OK, but going over 4.2x recommends an uninstall.

I guess LHC@home is using an older boinc library which doesn't work with ATI cards (the new cpdn hadsm3_4.13 fixes this problem for cpdn)

Carl,
Thanks. After I sent the message last night, I continued to read other posts and discovered that there was a newer version available. I uninstalled and then installed the 4.45, to no avail, still the same problem.
I noticed that there were some references to ATI graphics cards, is there a more specific list? Would the graphics card create the problems I'm experiencing? Seti runs fine, but I would like CPDN to do the same.
Thanks

There is a LONG thread on the SETI forum, and <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=2992&amp;highlight=ati"> this</a> thread on our forum.
Carl posted about a new version, 4.13, <a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board/viewtopic.php?t=3095&amp;highlight=ati"> here,</a> and this is now standard. So if you downloaded a new model in the last few days, you should have this version.
The BOINC gui will tell you which version it is using under the Work tab, and you can also see this in the hadsm file names in your climateprediction.net folder.

Also, the screensaver uses a few cpu clock cycles in displaying the globe, which can slow down the processing. How much depends mostly on how fast your graphics card is, and how much memory it has. So a lot of us don't use any ss; we just turn off the screen when not using it.

If this doesn't help, please post again.

Les,
Thanks for the info. I do like to watch the globe change. It hasn't been as bad since I switched to 4.45, occasionally instead of always does this problem occur.
Since I switched to 4.45 though, it has downloaded three work units and started to work on each one. My machine can't handle that. What do I do to limit it to only one?
Thanks
Rob

I'm confused. Can you tell us which host and which 3 work units? Do they appear on the work tab? Does the status show all 3 as running or 2 as preemted and 1 as running or something else?

Can you select one with lowest percent done and click suspend, then repeat for the next lowest percent done? (If one shows as only a few hours, you may want to abort rather than suspend. If you want to see the graphics you will want to start using 4.13 versions rather than 4.12 versions as soon as possible. It is however preferable to finish a 4.12 model especially if you are a long way into it.)

Ah. I wonder if you are getting <a href="http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Benchmark_Failure">Benchmark Failures</a>.

Les,
This didn't solve the problem. Now it cycles from the BOINC system status floating 'BOINC' star to the globe, but the globe only shows for a fraction of a second, freezes the machine, and then goes back to BOINC system status.
If I try to come out of the screen saver it only shows the mouse for fraction of a second, I have to press the power button to turn off the whole system.
I did try to attach to the ATI Beta posted in July, but kept getting a 'down for maintenance' error. I have suspended CPDN for now as SETI has a few close deadline jobs on my machine.
Does the ATI beta work? Is it back up from maintenance?
Thanks
Rob

crandles,
I did run the Benchmark and everything timed out fine. No aborts, or errors.
Thanks

The beta version seemed to work OK, so Carl made hadsm 4.13 the current version, and removed the beta link.
To get it, you will have to do a Reset, which will dump your current model and download the new hadsm and a new parameter set.
