Will BOINC work under a 64 bit processor.? It has been suggested that the program should run twice? as fast. Is this a valid statement.? |

BOINC and CPDN work fine on Athlon64s and P4s with EMT64, whether they are running 32 bit Linux or 64 bit Linux. CPDN has not been compiled for 64 bits, so there is really no speed increase due to the 64 bit capability of these processors. They tested a 64 bit version of the CPDN client for the sulphur alpha project, and there was a large speed increase (about 30% faster), but it was not stable and the IT people haven't had time to retry it. |

Still no 64 bit clients ? We\'re all getting these 64 bit cpus now and they\'re not being used to full advantage. |

There are many people participating with minimal machines and, one suspects, their number exceeds those of us with faster boxes. By the way, double posts on a subject aren\'t useful. Will BOINC work under a 64 bit processor.? It has been suggested that the program should run twice? as fast. Humm I tried running BOINC for CPDN under Ubuntu 6.0.6 (Linux) and I kept getting errors when the client kept getting errors that there were no packages available for 64 bit linux. Humpf. I will glady run my BOINC client again for CPDN, but I need to be able to crunch data, or my computer cycles are wasted. Some one tell me when CPDN is ready for us? |

You can crunch 32 bit science apps on 64 bit systems; you just need to set up your system to accept 32 bit apps. Judging by the posts on the php board, quite a few people are already doing this. A 64 bit climate model was tried last year, but was too unstable to even try a beta release. |

It\'s been the same for two years now with everything 64 bit. So few got them, someone say. bah. Some quote that on the model a 64 bit version has been used an increase of up to 30% in processing time can be achieved. OK - if just 1000 of those running a BOINC has got 64 bit machines, this counts for about 300 extra machines to do the same math? Are there a 1000 64 bit machines doing BOINC? A resounding YES. 10000? Yes. Not worth the hassle? How many model years you say? OK, if not those arguments get you: With 30% less powerconsumption on the same workload, this climate project would actually strive to be environmentally friendly as well? |

With 2 programmers, whose time is booked out for months ahead, the project will likely go with the 50,000 32 bit machines. And the new core 2 processors are running very fast on 32 bits, as well as the new Intel Macs, which are even faster. You want to argue or crunch? |

With 2 programmers, whose time is booked out for months ahead, the project will likely go with the 50,000 32 bit machines. I crunch 24/7. Just a shame that there are only 2 programmers on a job like this. All honour to them. I crunch because it is important work, and I would like to take it to the maximum. They run very fast, but we talk about running even faster, yes? And we are not talking about just 50000 machines, as BOINC now is used for several projects, yes? Even if I am a man, I can actually both do work and strive for improvement. |

Back in 2005, as part of the testing for the new coupled ocean models now running, some testing was done with 64 bits. These models didn\'t last long before crashing, and never made it out of Alpha testing. The problem was the coupling between the atmosphere part and the ocean part, which couldn\'t be made stable in 64 bits. And one of the programmers said in the restricted access area used by the admins here, that there wasn\'t much improvement in speed. As I recall, it didn\'t reach double figures. This is apparently because the models rely heavily on floating point calcs, and there wasn\'t much change in the fpu between the 32 bit and the 64 bit processors. |

These models didn\'t last long before crashing, and never made it out of Alpha testing. I honestly think that a 64 bit need to be made. Hell you cannot ever BUY a computer with a 32 bit anymore. And as far as the numbers of them out there... Just under MY roof, 3 normal 64 bits, 1 dual core 64 bits (ath) with 3-4 more (int 2.8 duo\'s) joining in in a matter of months... Now as far as 32 bits, yes I still have one going with another to join it soon, very soon. Now I am having issues with it running under linux, (ubuntu) under my 2K machines it runs flawlessly with no trouble at all from day 1. |

There is talk, (read: vague rumor, outside the core team), that some of the new models/projects being discussed may be 64 bits. But they will be conditional on funding, project approval, and getting the !@#$%^&*() thing to be stable. An unstable model may keep the \'64 biter\'s\' happy, but will be useless as far as the science goes. And, being in the very early stage of discussion, they won\'t arrive until 2008. If at all. The new \'low hd use\' model being beta tested right now will require SSE2, and an absolute memory minimum of 512 Megs of ram. (The data is kept in ram for as long as possible.) I\'d hazzard a guess that the 64 bit programs will also have these requirements, if not more. Which won\'t please the SETI migrants with older systems. but that\'s life. |

So if I download a Climate WU using my 64 bit BOINC and 64 Bit operating system (linux) will the climate 32 bit still run. I am running 64 bit applications like RieselSieve and ABC and WEP-M+2 Project on it but if I go away I like to run a Climate model because if my internet connection drops, I am in the country and it happens regularly, I can still process something. I\'m currently running two Beta Models on SuSE 10.2 64_bit. No problems. I\'ve run Sulphur Cycle, Spinups, and Seasonal Attribution Models on SuSE 10.0 64_bit. No problems. Of course, I use the regular 32-bit boinc software. If you\'re running 64_bit boinc, there might be issues. Yes it doesn\'t work with the 64 bit BOINC as I get the message that it can\'t find the 64 bit application. Thanks for the response. Proud Founder and member of Have a look at my WebCam |

I was hoping that a Linux person would answer, however ... 64 bit OS and BOINC will work, as long as you have the needed 32 bit programs / routines / modules, etc, so that BOINC can run as 32 bits for this project, and any others that don\'t have native 64 bit apps. As Carl has said elsewhere, SOME 64 bit climate models will/may be available later. Where \"later\" is probably next year, and will require more than just the bare minimum hardware. |

For the Gentoo users out there, this fairly nasty hack works for me so I can easily use the gentoo init-scripts and boinc_gui, but still run 32-bit BOINC with CPDN, and easier to set up than a 32-bit chroot: 1. Emerge boinc 64-bit # cat /etc/make.conf | grep CHOST CHOST=\"x86_64-pc-linux-gnu\" # emerge boinc -av 2. Download the boinc client to a temp directory and run the script to extract the files: # cd ~/tmp # ./boinc_5.8.15_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh # ls BOINC # ls BOINC binstall.sh boinc_cmd boincmgr.16x16.png boincmgr.8x8.png locale run_manager boinc boincmgr boincmgr.32x32.png ca-bundle.crt run_client 3. Finally, as root copy the 32-bit Boinc binaries over the 64-bit ones you emerged, start the boinc daemon and you\'re away. 64-bit boinc_gui will work with 32-bit boinc_client and boinc_cmd. # cp boinc /usr/bin/boinc_client # cp boinc_cmd /usr/bin/boinc_cmd # /etc/init.d/boinc start |

How is the situation today? Why CPDN don\'t have 64bit applications? ABC and RieselSieve are have a lot better performance on LINUX 64bit than on 32bit. So the power user crunch rather ABC or RieselSieve than CPDN. I think, some users (me too) will come back with a bunch of PCs to CPDN when 64bit applications are available. |
