I have two XP machines (id 77891 and 9811) which I recently updated to BOINC client 4.45. Both appear to be working fine - slowly but merrily clocking their way through their allocated work units. However both seem to have stopped sending in trickles (last trickle on one was 2/8 and on the other 4/8). As a result neither appears to be receiving credits at the moment.

Is this a problem with client 4.45 or is there a setting somewhere that I have to adjust?

Thanks, Brian

Thanks, Brian

First thing - are you sure that they really are processing their WUs? Just because the work tab says they are doesn't prove anything, unfortunately. The easiest check is probably to look at the graphics - if you can see the globe and the timesteps clicking by then all is well, and you can compare the timestep reached with that last trickled.

If this test fails, close and restart BOINC Manager. There is a bug in 4.45 which can cause the CPDN application to be closed but still be shown as working.

If the WUs are indeed running as normal, and you are well past the next trickle point, I'd suspect a comms problem. Your firewall may be blocking ports BOINC now needs. There is more help than you would ever need here. If it is beyond you, post here the messages you get and any other symptoms.

Well I was assuming they were processing because the CPU time was counting up and the time remaining reducing - also the system task manager says that the CPU utilisation is 100% and CPDN is using almost all of it. However, when I select "show graphics" precisely nothing happens. Even forcing BINC Manager to exit and then restarting the process doesn't change anything - still no response to "show graphics".

Should I abort and start all over?

You don't have an ATI graphics card, or integrated Intel graphics, by any chance? In that case up grading to 4.45 with the Hadsm3 4.12 app or earlier may well not give you graphics. If Hadsm3 is there in Task Manager then it is definitely running.

So, let's assume that all is well with the application, and that both machines should have trickled. That leaves a comms issue as the likely cause, and I would start with the firewall blocking one or more ports as the possible reason. That and the other possibilities in the BOINC-Wiki page should track it down.

One machine has an ATi card and the other has an Intel integrated graphics - so I guess I score 2 out of 2 for problem graphics choices! That explains the lack of graphics, but that lack of trickles is more peculiar. The machines are on separate networks (one at work, one at home) and I haven't changed anything in the network configuration at either location since they last trickled. It is almost as though 4.45 is just "forgetting" to send a trickle - there are no messages to suggest any comms difficulties.

Anyway, I'll have a look at the BOINC-Wiki page as you suggest. Thanks for the direction.

Quick update - the machine on which I re-started BOINC yesterday evening trickled overnight, so I will try that on the other machine and see whether that solves the problem. It would appear to be a BOINC 4.45 issue as I've never had the problem before.

Thanks, Brian
