I have been runnning a project since january.
Recently I have been putting on a push to wrap it up and had reached 82% completion as of yesterday.

Last night work stopped being sent, with a note that I had to update my client.

I updated my client which required uninstalling the prior client. The updated client reset everything to 0%.

Obviously this has happened before to others. You must be well aware of the problem. I only followed instructions. Needless to say I am ticked off.

What happened?

You were running BOINC 4.13, which has been causing lots of failures across all projects.
A few weeks ago, Berekeley recommended that all projects enforce a minimum version of 4.19, which is stable.
At that time, cpdn implemented this restriction.

BOINC versions above 4.19 use a different type of installation, which is why the previous version had to be uninstalled.
If it was done using Control Panel, it should have simply removed the old BOINC, and then the new version should have loaded and started running the model from where you were before the change.

It is possible that the model has been rewound to the beginning, and is retracing it's steps. If so, you won't get new credits until you reach new territory.

If you are running several projects, with cpdn only getting a low processor share, it will be a while before you complete it.
You could do a Reset, which will abort the current model and download a new data set, along with the current hadsm version, 4.13, and start from scratch.

Which instructions? If you followed the advice in many of this forum's posts, then you have made a full backup copy of your BOINC folder before doing any upgrade. This way you can restore to your previous status if anything goes wrong.

Very sorry to hear of your loss of a WU John, it is rotten if you loose one especially at such a late stage.

I haven't heard of an upgrade causing a unit to crash before but I am not sure whether that has happened in this case.

I see 2 possibilities: either WU crashed causing need for a new WU and this then generates message about needing to upgrade. In this case following instructions did not cause the problem.

The other possibility is that you reached your upload at most every x days preference causing the need to upgrade. There are then 2 possibilities - your computer didn't like the newer version or the upgrade caused the crash.

If the upgrade did cause the crash then that would be serious and it might be appropriate to send emails to everyone running less than 4.19 to tell them to ignore the upgrade message and not to upgrade until their model completes. If we hear of other cases that might become appropriate.
