(A returning participant writes) BOINC seems to be well supported under FreeBSD now. When I try to run it with CPDN I get the following error from the server: 2005-09-14 13:12:51 [climateprediction.net] Message from server: platform \'i386-portbld-freebsd5.3\' not found which I presume means that the cpdn data/model hasn\'t been ported. is there any way around this yet? |

HI, AFAIK, no way around this. CPDN models are compiled for Windows, Linux and Mac, but not for *BSD OS And as the source code of the models is not available, you can\'t compile it yourself. (It\'s a pity because I tested a live cd of FreeBSD with KDE a few months ago and I was impressed by the simplicity and efficiency of this version: I thought BSD was for super-gurus running servers, etc, but newbies like me can also use it for every day stuff like email or browsing internet.) HI, :( a pity. I admin some high-end servers, all running freebsd. Could a freebsd version be all that much different to the mac osx version?
been using freebsd since \'97. It\'s linux i can\'t understand! :) I\'ve been trying the boinc CPDN compiled for linux but after passing the initial tests it just sits there waiting to download work. next step is to run it off knoppix (urgh!) |

now that we\'re getting setup with new development hardware, I\'m going to switch us all to using Linux and run VMWare for Windows, other Linux(ii), and perhaps FreeBSD to compile. I would like to do Sun/Solaris builds but we have no access to any good Sun box to try to compile. But I think FreeBSD may be possible? Oh wait, I don\'t think there will be a FreeBSD Fortran compiler that will compile the model! we use Intel which is only for Linux. |

There are plenty of free fortran compilers in /usr/ports/lang. Here\'s an online list: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/ports.cgi?query=fortran&stype=all Why would you have to use intel compiler? -- farenheit451 |

I and several others I know have FreeBSD file servers just humming away at average 97% idle CPU time just waitng for something more interesting to do. I\'d offer to run the compilation/debugging for CPDN, but with my poor skills the earth will be dealing with the next ice age by the time I finish (!). Thanks for your consideration. Z. |

There is ports of both Intel fortran V7 and V8 compilers for Linux that output FreeBSD native code in the FreeBSD ports tree. As the port was done by the same person he may be persuaded to work on the V9 compiler if thats neccerary. A FreeBSD version would hopefully only be a case of a recompile with the modified compiler if there is no library problems. /Johan Hopeful FreeBSD owner. |
