Hey just writing to say I just started here at climateprediction and am also running SETI@home. Any other SETI people here?

I would even venture a guess that there are probably more S@H people here than people who were previously only running CPDN classic.

My reasoning is that they have been using a client that works, and as I understand it will still be supported even with the new BOINC CPDN, so there really isn't much incentive to switch to BOINC.

I know there are a few adventuring souls who I think like to test new things that have switched. But in general, my feeling is that the majority of current users are those that were already familiar with the BOINC platform. Which would be S@H/P@H users. :)

Of course, that's just a guess, and I have no actual data to back it up.

Your going to find more BOINC users that want to run practical projects here. SETI@home is somewhat pie in the sky stuff...there may or may not be any life out there and it may NEVER succeed. Things like predictor@home and climatepredictor have goals likely to get accomplished and likely we will see the fruits of this labor in our lifetimes and possibly benefit from this work directly someday.


Seti@home on BOINC I think will eventually incorporate other science besides the search for ET...but untill then you will tend to find the more practical minded running BOINC projects that have a goal more likely to be attained.


Of course this project almost requires a full time computer going 24/7 to run it...the WU'S are so long as to scare off the casual users afraid of what is basically a full-time committment to this project. BOINC 4 with project sharing working will help alot in that end...it's probably the BEST THING to ever happen to this project.


The nice thing about BOINC is choices. You can run 1, 2, or all 3 projects(soon) if you want on the same computer with more projects coming along. There will be something for everyone.

Absolutely! I've been pretty excited about the whole BOINC concept since I first heard about it. The ability to run many different distributed computing projects from a single application is just incredible, and it can only serve to help <b>all</b> D.C. projects. The ease of running various projects is sure to gain countless users as more projects jump on board. :)

My feelings as well. I have been crunching with SETI since 2001, and am SETI through and through...

BUT, with BOINC I am rethinking my approach. One platform able to run MANY projects... its a GREAT thing. The individual choice with ease of not having to run multiple programs, which all try and hog the CPU and force out the other projects.

CPDN, Predictor and SETI are all so different, but all so worthwhile. The appeal to different people, and thats what I love. Resource sharing is a gem.

My hats off to the BOINC dev, to CPDN and the other projects for transitioning, and most of all listening to the many many little users that make these projects so great.
