If I upgrade my computer to Boinc Versin 5.1.3 will I lose all the work I have done on the present WU in ClimatePrediction.net? That is what happened with the S@H Beta project; the new version trashed all current WUs in the queue and then downloaded more. If so, how can I avoid this problem? |

You shouldn\'t. But that is the typical answer for all things computer. I only know about Windows, but it should be the same for other Operating Systems. I just upgraded to 5.1.8 on three Windows machines with no problems. By the way, rumor has it that the 5.2 \"recommended version\" is due out within the next couple of days, so you might want to delay. It is a simple thing. Stop BOINC (which should stop all running projects). If you are worried about losing work, make a temporary copy of the /BOINC folder. From the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel, remove BOINC (this is necessary when making a major version change, i.e. 4.x to 5.x. Failure to do this when moving from 3.x to 4.x caused all sorts of havoc). Install the new BOINC into same directory it was in. Restart BOINC. All should be well. Hope this helps... and of course, there is always the Wiki for lots more. |

You shouldn\'t. But that is the typical answer for all things computer. The problems associated with changing major versions have been removed. If you are running 4.20 or later you can install the 5.x.x version over the existing version. 4.19 and earlier used a different installer and must be uninstalled before you can install a later version. Other than that Bill\'s answer is correct. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |
