I have been running a Climate project for several months on a laptop. I am now using a desktop and want to stop using the laptop. How can I transfer the workfile in progress to the desktop PC on which another Climate project is already running.? Desktop will run: Climate (2 projects), Einstein and Seti. Thanks for help |

Generally, BOINC requires that a workunit downloaded to a computer must be returned by that computer. I seem to recall reading in a forum message thread somewhere (I couldn\'t find it, and it was quite a while ago) that it may be possible to move a project folder to another computer, do the work there, move it back, and report from the original computer. It sounded complex, error prone, not particularly reliable, and IMO not worth the effort. If it were me, and the work unit was reasonably close to finishing, I would just select \"No new work\" to keep it from getting any more work, and let if finish where it is. If that was not possible for some reason, computers \"go away\" all the time due to system crashes, participant boredom, etc. BOINC was designed to handle those sorts of things. Life goes on. Someone may be able to point you to the thread I mentioned, or it may have all been in my imagination. |

This is going to be messy because of the multiple projects. One way is to suspend and then exit BOINC on the desktop, and then move the entire BOINC folder to a safe place. Next, copy the entire BOINC folder on the laptop, and then save it to the desktop where the original BOINC was. If you have multiple projects on the laptop, it may simplify things to set the others to \'no more work\', and then let the current wus finish before copying. Because the computers use different cpus, etc, you may have to edit some of the xml files, copying parts from the desktop xmls to the same place in the laptop copy. Or it may suffice to replace the entire xml file. If you use cds/dvd to copy the files, you will have to reset the attributes for the files, as they will end up as read only. If you can transfer by a cable, this won\'t be a problem. Then, once the former laptop model has finished, copy back the original desktop saved folders, and continue with those models. All this may need some refining, so ask again for more help if/when needed. |
