The instruction for attaching to a project indicate that i would need to enter the http://climateprediction.net URL and my account number. But clicking attach to project, i enter the URL but then instead of being asked for the account number it asks for my HTTP Proxy or SOCKS Proxy Configuration. and i dont use or have either

Is this page from the BOINC-Wiki helpful to you?

EDIT There are differences between versions in the method of attaching to projects. It might be wise to install the latest version if you have not done so. If you are still stuck, let us know which version you are on.

I\'m having this same problem -- just downloaded version 5.2.8 from the above URL. I understand they changed the method of attaching in this version from URL/Key to URL/EMail/Password. Is this affecting it somehow?

EDIT: I\'ve just discovered the same thing happens with setiathome.berkeley.edu

I had the problem and solved it by totally getting out of boinc and restarting it from the programs menu. So exit totally first.

Apparently there is a problem if you have a slow net connection.
I found the following in a post on the BOINC forums:
-----------
Message 1043 - Posted 24 Nov 2005 0:11:46 UTC

Ports to open for Boinc.exe: TCP 80.
Ports to open on LAN for Boinc.exe and Boincmgr.exe: TCP 1043 and TCP 31416.

Proxy? One of choice.
BOINC will only pop up the request for a proxy, if your connection is too slow in connecting. Check your firewall.
------------
Also, there is now a BOINC 5.2.8, which has this in the version details:
------------
# Changes since 5.2.7

* Localization updates.
* Resolve many connection issues regarding passwords.
* Mac: Fix a screensaver stutter while scrolling text.
------------
The password fix may be of interest.

Reading all this information I disbabled my Firewall (which I don\'t like doing)and tried again. This time I didn\'t get the problem with HTTLP sockets but it wanted email addresses and such like and whne ai tried to create on it objected as it said already existed and woulnd\'t allow my to change my password.

Bugger this for a game of soldiers - I never had this problem with SETI. BOINC is history as far as I am concerned.

This worked for me, too! Feels like a bug in 5.2.8.

I installed BOINC yesterday and got the proxy-questions mentioned by others. Tried re-installing as single user (was shared), but no-go. Tried restarting program - no-go, cold-booting pc - no-go. Tried again this afternoon, just for the fun of it and lo and behold, BOINC asked the right questions. Am now running SETI and ClimatePrediction. Can\'t help, really, because I don\'t know what happened :-/ Maybe you could try later like I did...

All the project servers have been busy recently because of the impending switch-off of SETI classic. It seems that if the latest version of BOINC doesn\'t get a reply within 3 seconds it panics and thinks the settings are wrong and it needs a proxy. That\'s a bug, but until it is fixed people will just have to be patient and keep trying.
