I am running sulphur model with a BOINC version 4.45. It seems to be piling up hundreds of Megabytes for upload, while only @ 1% of the process. (This is shocking after experience with SETI.) If I extrapolate, there will not be enough storage space on the installation partition to conclude the experiment. (I have also set a percentage limit in relation to free disk space, which is already near.) No uploads have happened so far. I have only modem connection. Should I leave this project? Or is anything malfunctioning? |

Sulphur does use a lot more disk space than slab. Perhaps 2.5 GB before everything gets compressed at the end of phase 5. However, it takes even more if one accidentally hits the \"G\" key while looking at the visualization, it will record lots of files \"for playback\". These files get dumped to the projects/climateprediction.net/experiment name/tmp directory. Normally, you should only have about 4 or 5 files in that directory. |

There is a serious bug in BOINC 4.45, so I suggest that you upgrade to the latest version, currently 5.2.13 |

Obviously, I pressed \'G\', because in fact, I have 11475 files there, using 1.3 GB space. I have better use of that space, so I would not like to store useless scrap for several weeks. Is there a way to get rid of them without spoiling the experiment? How about (after exiting the program) hacking the directory? I mean manually deleting all files except the four ones below: {name} {size} cache2 1236992 cp.namelists 15697 p0_dummy 0 pipe_dummy 14 |

How about (after exiting the program) hacking the directory? I mean manually deleting all files except the four ones below: That should work. |

In light of this, I\'ll make the playback functionality a key combination you type ( e.d \"record\" ) rather than one you could hit accidentally. I did this originally but was told it would be too difficult for ppl to discover. - Comments welcome please. |

I did this originally but was told it would be too difficult I don\'t think it is a good thing to rely on people \'discovering\' the more sophisticated aspects of the visualisation. What is needed is enhanced \'viewing my model\' help pages. I know information is in the contact and support section, and more in the community forum, but they are not easy to find. I think that the project should make more use of the BOINC-Wiki, which has become the authoritative guide to all things BOINC. I\'m sure Paul Buck will jump in if he thinks I am getting above myself, but if one or two people were to volunteer to write the pages, with pictures if necessary, then that would serve. There is already a need to signpost the BOINC-Wiki more clearly on this site anyway, since that is now the more authoritative and up to date source for climateprediction FAQs as well as the other \'why doesn\'t it work?\' queries. And if people are in the habit of looking there before asking the board, or trying to contact the team, there is less excuse for saying \'I never knew it could do that\'. |

In light of this, I\'ll make the playback functionality While Andrew\'s idea of steering people to the BOINC Wiki is good, I do believe that a key combination for that function would help considerably. How about Ctrl Alt G I don\'t think anyone would accidentally hit that combination (but you never know ;). You could also have feedback when it is occurring, something like \"Recording images...\" so people wouldn\'t forget that was on. Of course one would then have \"Recording images\" on their captured files, which might confuse them during playback!? It\'s tough to win in this circumstance... Edited to insert Ctrl Alt in right format |

The ideal solution to this is when recording to make the window bigger for an extra line at the bottom saying \"Recording images\" but only record the images in the window excluding that line. Alternatively when playing back overwrite it a message saying \"Playing recorded images\". I agree about steering people to the Wiki (well I would wouldn\'t I). It shouldn\'t be too much trouble to head up the FAQ page with a message to the effect. Some participants are writing a Wiki. As this is editable by participants it is often more up to date than this page. Therefore you may prefer to look at <a href=\"http://boinc-doc.net/boinc-wiki/index.php?title=Climateprediction_FAQ\">the Wiki version</a>. Hmmm...I used some illegal characters when I suggested G for a hotkey. I meant Ctrl Alt G |

Some participants are writing a Wiki. I didn\'t find it when I looked before, but the page on the visualisation is here. Clearly the record function needs a mention, and anything else that Tolu sees that has been missed. A direct link to this page from the site would be useful to newbies I\'m sure. I agree, of course, on using some form of key combination to initiate anything important, rather than a single key. I have cats. |

Ctrl Alt G seems good. I\'ll do this right away. I\'ll also add messages to indicate which operation i.e \"recording...\" \"playback...\" This reflects better usability - which is good. |

How about (after exiting the program) hacking the directory? I mean manually deleting all files except the four ones below: OK, I did it, and nothing bad seems to have happened. 1.3 GB wiped out fine, thanks. Still, if the 2.5 GB usueful data in the end is a good prediction, I feel I should have been warned beforehand by climatepredicion.net. |

Ctrl Alt G seems good. I\'ll do this right away.Just hitted \'G\' on a SpinUp - took well over 4 or 5GB of extra data before I realized. What has been suggested above is a good way to solve. Hope it has been incorporated... <i>phpBB forum for CPDN, all are </i><a href="http://www.climateprediction.net/board">invited</a> |

Over 3.5GB in the temp directory since I pressed \'G\' yesterday, problem now sorted :-) How about (after exiting the program) hacking the directory? I mean manually deleting all files except the four ones below: I'm a volunteer and my views are my own. News and Announcements and FAQ |
