Some help on BOINC would be nice.
BOINC manager is unable to connect to a BOINC client.

1. Are you running BOINC version 5.2.13 (or later if there has been a new version since this post)? If not, I recommend upgrading and trying that.

2. If you are, does exiting BOINC Manager completely (File/Exit) and restarting help? Or even rebooting the computer?

If you are still having problems, then life is more difficult. If you are a technophobe, you would probably rather not know the details, but post again and people will try and offer more advice.

If you want to explore this topic further, I\'d recommend that you go to the BOINC message board but it will take a while to read through the discussions.

There is general advice on all aspects of BOINC in the BOINC-Wiki.

The history behind this is that I was here two weeks ago and found a download \'cpdn_2_2_29.exe\' which installs the prediction model as a service. This is working happily. When I look in the downloads section now, all I can find is BOINC and this doesn\'t work. I downloaded BOINC from this site this week.
When using BOINC I\'ve tried switching off my firewall before connecting and tried connecting to \'Climateprediction.net\' and \'www.climateprediction.net\' to no avail.

The program you downloaded 2 weeks ago is what\'s now known as CPDN classic. Although it runs the same 3 phase slab model as the BOINC version, it runs as a standalone program and isn\'t related to BOINC in any other way.

Also, with the BOINC version you will almost exclusively be assigned a 5 phase sulphur model at the moment.

Unless you are running the project as part of the Open University climate short course you\'ll almost certainly want to run the BOINC version exclusively. If that\'s the case you should disable the CPDN classic service and possibly uninstall the program when you\'ve confirmed that your system runs the BOINC version.

Your connection problems with BOINC might be because the \"Getting Started\" instructions haven\'t been updated with the procedure required for the current version of BOINC.

You need to go to the \"Change password\" link on the \"Your account\" page (this is a direct link) and set up your own password. Use that instead of your account key when you connect to the project.

Sorry, I didn\'t explain. CPDN classic is on my work PC. BOINC on my home PC.
Should I stop CPDN classic and get BOINC? It is currently 65% through Phase 1. Should I wait until CPDN finishes it\'s experiment?

regards
Seb

P.S. No, I\'m not doing an Open University course.

As you are now over 20% of the way through the experiment you will probably want to finish it. But BOINC is more advanced and flexible a tool, and allows you to run the latest experiments which the scientists are wanting. If you go to your classic account and edit your profile, you will find an \'account active\' box which you can untick to tell it not to send you any more work when you finish. I don\'t recommend that you run both classic and BOINC simultaneously.

Classic is now for people doing the OU course, as Thyme Lawn says, or those genuinely unable to run experiments under BOINC, such as Win98/ME users.
