Hello everybody! When looking for alternatives to Seti@Home, I came across CPDN which seemed to me a project really worth of donating computer resources to. Sadly, I learned only AFTER downloading a 22 MB sulphur WU that it wouldn\'t run successfully on my Windows Me system (silly me). I haven\'t started processing the WU yet, hoping there would be a way for me to upgrade to Windows XP and to persuade the new system somehow to accept an old BOINC backup folder. I would have hated the thought of a WU being lost or of somebody else losing credits because of my fault.
However, checking the status of the WU in question I found out today that the server state was already \"over\" and that I had been granted 0 credits, apparently because of a client error in the other machine that had been given this particular WU. Two questions arise:
1. Can I now safely detach my machine from the project (erasing the WU by doing so) without any science being lost? (My machine wouldn\'t meet the specs for sulphur models anyway - as I\'ve learned from the boards, not from the technical specs page - running at 900 MHz only.)
2. As I\'m a newbie to CPDN, I wonder what the point is of abandoning a WU because of a client error occurring in only ONE of the two machines the WU has been given to. After all, if my machine had met the specs, maybe it would have crunched the WU to the end? Or did I get the WU status page wrong?

The status of OVER on the \"New\" one just means that they do not want the WU to be sent to anyone else. It does not mean you have finished it. Read Carl\'s post about the explaination.

Is the WU still in your manager? If so, I hope you have it paused. We can then get you crunching that WU under a different OS. If no, then it may be lost.

As for moving to a new OS, all other projects should be set to NO NEW WORK, and allow them to finish all their crunching, uploading and reporting before attempting this.

Once all the other projects are done, backup your BOINC folder. Install the new OS. Copy the BOINC folder back to the machine, install BOINC over this folder. Once install you can start the projects back up. If the CPDN one is there, it will start crunching. If no, you can just let it ask for a new WU.

Thank you very much for your help! I\'ll do exactly what you have suggested. Thanks especially for your advice to install BOINC _over_ the Backup folder on the new system - I would have tried it the other way round first, like when restoring a backup. Mý next challenges will be to get myself a copy of Windows XP at a reasonable price, and to get that WU processed on my 900 MHz not-running-24/7 system before the deadline is over. The specs for running sulphur models really should be mentioned on the Technical Specifications page, as people elsewhere on these boards have stated ...

No need to worry about the deadline. They are still accepted after, as long as trickles are on a somewhat regular basis.

The reason I suggested after (as others will testify) is because if you are changing OS, etc. certain pointers will need to be set. It also allows you to install to a different drive. It acts just like and upgrade. Your WU(s) and important information will stay, but it will run off the new \"spot\" without a hitch.
