Hello ! Since I run the sulphur project I have some problems with my boinc. If I run the computer in normal mode and shut down all programs (like ICQ, MSN and so on) only around one third of all time is counted as CPU time. Today I tried the \"save/diagnostic mode\" (only the necessary applications were load) and the CPU-time was right. But I don`t understand why. I have a laptop with an Intel Pentium M Processor with 1600MHz, 1024 MB RAM and enough free disk space. There runs no special software at this computer. I have Windows XP and Office 2003, both with the latest Updates. Furthermore I run Kapersky Antivirus, MSN Messanger, ICQ and Scype. The creensaver is switched off. With the old project everything was fine. Even since I run the sulphur project my average credit decreases. At the start of sulphur I had an average credit around 120, now it´s down to under 90. I run the project 15hours and more each day, but the average credit is still falling. A lot of time the computer runs without a internet connection, but it is able to send results 1-2 times a day. When the pc is without an internet connection I switch off the network activity of boinc. For example today I run the boinc project alone (no other software) for 12 hours, but the average credit fall from 96 to 87. Why ??? Another problem is, that Boinc downloaded a second sulphur project which is waiting to run. But the activ project is very new, only around 3,5%. So I will not be able to finish the second project in time. What should I do? Let it be like it is and run it in 6 months or should I cancel the second project? |

RAC is just about meaningless in cpdn. You need to go on the number of trickles sent per day. Because of complaints from slow computer users, Carl changed the formula for calculating RAC, about October / November. Also, sulphur models are slower, and have 5 phases instead of the 3 used in slab. As for getting an extra data set, are you running BOINC 4.45? This version had a habit of doing this. It also has an even worse bug, which causes the science app to not restart after a benchmark, which BOINC runs every 5 days. |

The changed formula explains my declining average credit. At the moment I sent 1 trickle every 2 days !?! Do you have an idea what is the reason for the low cpu time when I run my computer in normal mode? regards, Marc |

> Do you have an idea what is the reason for the low cpu time when I run my computer in normal mode? Not really. Do you have your prefs set to \"Leave app in memory when exited\" = yes? This is recommended. Upgrading to BOINC 5.* SHOULDN\'T caused a data loss. But make a backup first. You never know! :) Suspend BOINC, wait until it says it is, then exit. THEN make the backup. Then download the new version and run it. It should start up OK. (Perhaps Suspended.) BUT ... It has been \"improved\". Once you get it running, it\'s not a problem. For some people, it\'s the \"getting it running the first time\" that\'s hard. A couple of hints: 1) It uses email/password: so, create a password in your Account first. And REMEMBER IT! 2) If it doesn\'t start up, go to File in the menu, and click \'Select computer\'. This gives a two line window for selecting one of your remotely controlled computers. Click on OK, leaving BOTH windows empty. This will select your \'Localhost\'. Now you can go to projects in the menu, and click on Attach to project. The rest should be simple. If not, post back and we\'ll have another go. 3) In the menu, under Options / Options / Connections, select \'Lan\'. This will stop BOINC continually asking which connection it should use. |

I must run the setup only, nothing else was necessary. Now the CPU time is right in normal mode and in diagnostic mode. Only if I switch on the screen saver the time goes wrong. The project runs much faster in normal mode now. regards, Marc |
