Message 19250 - Posted: 13 Jan 2006, 10:49:53 UTC

I have been running climateprediction programs for about a year, using a version 4 of your program.

I upgraded a week or so ago with a new 250G hard drive and a re-install of Windows XP. I have not had much success in reconnecting. Reading your website, I saw that you recommended version 5. I removed the old version 4, and downloaded v. 5. I thought I have done everything to re-connect, but my message tab on BOINC Manager shows a recent lack of activity, the last message being: Fetching config from http://www.climateprediction.net/get_project_config.php , following which I have had nothing.

Reading further on your pages, I also realise that I have been a naughty boy in not shutting down BOINC before switching off the machine, and various other misdemeanours. I hope these actions have not proved fatal or ionconvenient; if so, my apologies.

Help, please!

Yes, Jim, \'Add or Remove Programs\' was used, before downloading V.5. I was following the recommendation to upgrade. I have had 24 messages, the last three when I tried to \'Attach to Project\' for a second time. Does this help?

Open Boinc go to the top bar, click on help and then click on, about Boinc, what does it say there.....

There is mo \'About BOINC\', but the equivalent is \'About BOINC Manager\' which gives version 5.2.13, the Copyright (C) 2005, etc.

Whoops you stopped a few lines short of what we needed. We see it start up without being attached to any project, then the last few lines look like the begining of an attempt at attaching. But there is no info about why it is not attaching for you.

A simple way of attaching if you have another computer or access to the old files is to copy the account*.xml files to the new BOINC directory and restarting the client.

Your acct shows you are attached to CPDN and attempted to download 2 WUs and both of they errored out with file transfer errors, this is over my head so will deffer to the more knowledgeable members...

Alan
See Carl\'s post <a href=\"http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=3866#19275\"> here.</a>

Also, your computer is just crashing the models you have been getting, so perhaps you should find out why while you\'re waiting.

Answer: I found two files, account_.xml and account_www.climateprediction.net.xml, and a folder, www.climateprediction.net containing an application file, sulphur_4.22_windows_intelx86, and three zipped folders, sulphur_data, sulphur_se, and sulphur_um,_4.22_windowsx86. I have copied these to the folder with BOINC 5 in, and restarted the program. After a fair amount of activity the program then stops, having said \'resuming activity\'.

The log, edited to get rid of repetitions is below:

Having reached this point the machine just waits.

I hope this helps in finding where I\'m going wrong!

I guess it would help to set :

Do work while computer is in use? YES

Currently you have set it to an idle time of 2 minutes before it tries to do something. While you check the BOINC logs, your computer is \"in use\" as you\'re using the keyboard.

That\'s why the logs probably don\'t grow after the initialisation phase.

Answer: I have waited far longer than two minutes to let the computer re-act, but nothing ever happened! This preference was set so as not to slow down the machine when I was using it - whether I would notice it I\'m not sure. However, I have set my preferences as advised; if nothing else, it will stop the message lines concerning \'Stop processing - computer is active\', etc.

Thanks for your interest.

The failed downloads are a database problem for the last few days. See this thread for more info.

Yippee!!! It\'s up and running again - on an application called sulphur_cycle 4.22 and it\'s done 4.11%.

Thanks, everybody, for your help.
