I am getting ready to do a major upgrade on my computer. New motherboard, processor and RAM, so, basically, a whole new system. I plan on moving the hard drives over without installing a new OS. Should I let all of my current work units finish or will it be ok to continue work on them with different hardware? Should I Uninstall BOINC and reinstall on the new hardware or will the project care if this copy of BOINC is suddenly on a new computer? And are there any other problems that I am not thinking of?

CPDN isn\'t picky. If you install the same BOINC version on the new box (for the registry entries) without attaching to any project and then copy the complete BOINC directory (including subdirectories) over the fresh installed one, it should work smooth.

If you use CD or DVD for copying, check if there\'s nothing readonly after you copied it to the new box. As CD/DVD are readonly, some programs tend to take over the readonly flag to the HD copy.

If it\'s the same HD, you could maybe use a second partition for the copy if you have one.

I moved CPDN models 3 times, from dual to single CPU systems, from Intel to AMD, from AMD to Intel - I never had trouble even when the computer ID changed.

Me thinks the OS may get confused, but I do not know that much about,,,,,

I was told, on another forum, that BOINC would detect the new processor, run a new set of benchmarks, and then not continue work on old workunits. In any case, I got all work units but the CPDN one done. I would have needed two more weeks of constant work to finish that one.

I would, however, like to thank all the well meaning people who gave me all of that wonderful advice on how to upgrade my hardware. No offence intended, but I do this kind of thing for a living and I can handle a little hardware upgrade. In total, on about ten forums, I got two posts with knowledgeable advice on how BOINC works and the rest was people arguing over how I should set up my new hardware.
