I have a cable internet connection so my downloads go fast. My parents are also running BOINC.. but they have dial up and the WU took almost 2 hours to download. Is it possible for me to download for them and burn the file to a disc for them? Would I download the winzip files and save it to the BOINC folder.. would it automatically run the file? It would just be faster for them if I could do that. |

I\'m a little confused here. You say that they already have a model, (wu). This would mean that they also have the science app, which, (usually), gets downloaded first. However, if they don\'t have a data set to run, just downloading one on your computer for them won\'t work. There is a lot of data in client_state.xml which describes the file, and their copy wouldn\'t include this. I don\'t know if it would work, but one way, if they already have an account / computer ID, might be for you to copy their BOINC folder to a dvd, suspend and exit your BOINC, move your BOINC folder to somewhere else, then copy their BOINC folder to your computer where your\'s was. Make sure at this point that ALL the files are r/w after being on the dvd. Then you can run their BOINC on your computer, and get a model. After you have the model, reverse the process, to copy everything back to their computer, including the model data, client_state, etc. Then COPY your BOINC back to where it was. (A copy will give you a backup at this point.) One problem with switching computers, is that info about the computer is included in client_state, so yours and theirs will need to be the same. If they aren\'t, some editing of client_state will be needed each time you switch. And there may be other problems. BOINC isn\'t meant to be used this way, so you have to work out the fiddly bits as you go. |

I\'m a little confused here. Good advice there. One thing you may also want to try is copying the CPDN project folder over. If BOINC recognises the files when it tries to download it will save some download time since it already has copies of the exe and supporting files. BOINC WIKI BOINCing since 2002/12/8 |
