I\'m a new BOINC user and am still exploring the preferences settings. The old model only took up 50% CPU usage at max. The BOINC model is taking up 100% CPU usage. Is there a setting I can change to make it only take up 50%?

Thanks.
Chris

Hi Chris,

Following the computer links from your account page there are 2 work units on your system, which is registered as having 2 processors. My guess is that the system is hyper-threaded, which means that it's a single processor operating as 2 virtual processors. The CPDN "classic" program would only make use of one of the VPs, so could only ever get up to 50% of CPU usage. The BOINC version allows both of them to be used for the project, which would account for the other 50% being used.

If you open up the BOINC window and go to the work tab you'll have 2 jobs listed and both of them should be running.

There's no need to worry about your processor being 100% utilised, because the models are running at a lower priority than any other software you run on your comupter, so anything else you run will just take whatever processing power it needs away from the CPDN models.

if you want to get to "50%" again change your pref to just use 1 cpu max, and then do an "Update" on CPDN from BOINC (to get these new prefs). It should preempt the other model that is running. It may not be immediate unless you quit boinc after the update and then restart it.

But I ask me why should I use only a half Horse, when Ican use it complete.
This sounds to me like someone drives a Lamborgini only in the First and Second Gear. ;)

This supports only the Project better, I wish Ihad a Intel HT Maschien.

Be carefull, since maintain the usage of cpu at 100% for a long time may damage it.

In my case (PIII - 800 Mhz), BOINC, with the new project and 1 CPU, takes 100% and reach levels over 1, (keep in mind that 1 is the maximun).
