I have been running BOINC as beta test since december '02. Today I saw a message for running CPDN on BOINC and decided to run it. now at about every percent of progress (or so), the following popup appears, and upon hitting the OK button work in progress freezes. <img src="http://216.198.119.31/BOINC/CPDN/cpdnerr01.gif"> My PC is a HP Pavilion, 933 MHz, 256MB RAM, 30 GB free HD space. sorry, forgot the 2nd most important part: WinME. stderr_um.txt containd the following entries: CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 60 Not Opened CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 62 Not Opened CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 63 Not Opened CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 64 Not Opened CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 65 Not Opened CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 66 Not Opened CLOSE: WARNING: Unit 67 Not Opened forrtl: This function is not supported on this system. <b>Update:</b> CP started at 05:43 at about 10:00 I noticed the error. CP had about 2 hours of CPU time. When LHC and CP "switched" at 10:43, CPU time was increasing for both projects. Somehow CP doesn't stop when it should... While I was writing this, LHC was "preempted", SAH still didn't receive work and CP was the only one running (and increasing CPU time). CP had currently a CPU time of 04:37:00 at 12:20 CDT. (that's PM - with 0.02% done :) I then clicked on "show graphics" and had the following information on the screen: Phase : 1 of 3 / Timestep : 144 of 259248 Model Date : 04/12/1810 00:00 Run ID: 2s4w_000151086, CPU Time: 0000:16:06 (6.71 s/TS) When I closed the error message (Visual Fortran run-time error) the CPU time in BOINC for CP stopped. -- Robi |

HP Pavilion a562n P4 3.0E 512mb I got the same message, HP loads a bunch of garbage software on its computers, Delete HP's software in add\remove programs or remove them from memory in task manager. That fixed my problem anyhow. |

(if I turn it off, you won't be able to see the error message :-/ ) -- Robi |

I saw this on My XP machine as well. here's a screenshot <img src="http://members.shaw.ca/joevoxxer/DeathByClimatePrediction.jpg"> Running the CLI only gives more info before a crash. My first instinct was to detach from Climateprediction, as it had the window with the fortran error. But the Gui still crashed ten seconds into running. so.. ended up removing all projects, and reattaching again. It seems that predictor and climatepredition have some down servers. Also, seti's user setup page is down, so I can't fix the link to the images for userlogo, etc. C:Program FilesBOINC> C:Program FilesBOINC> C:Program FilesBOINC><b>boinc_cli.exe -allow_remote_gui_rpc</b> To pause/resume tasks hit CTRL-C, to exit hit CTRL-BREAK 2004-09-01 19:49:23 [---] Starting BOINC client version 4.05 for windows_intelx8 6 2004-09-01 19:49:23 [LHC@home] Project prefs: no separate prefs for home; Ditto on my XP Pro, SP2, AMD XP3200+ @2.23Ghz w/ 1G ram. I have screen prints and the stdtxt, stderr files if someone wants to provide an email address to send them to. Interesting thing is I'm running the same account/combo of BOINC 4.05 w/ CPDN, SETI & PREDICTOR on 5 other machines and the combo of BOINC 4.05 w/ SETI only on 4 more machines and am only haveing problems with this one. These vary from a Dell P2 @ 400Mhz to P4s @ 2.8Ghz machines. Most running XP Pro SP1 but some with NT Server and 1 Win 2K SP4 and 2 with XP Pro SP2. The other two with XP Pro SP2 are AMD XP24s. The prior day it crapped out a couple HADSM runs early and ask if I wanted to send a report to MS (I declined the generous offer) but I didn't capture any info then due to time constraints. Skip |

After reading the cross post (Carl in Germany) I checked and found out one thing different on this machine... it's the only one using the SP2 firewall the other two are using Norton Internet Security. I'll change that and see what happens over the next 24hrs. |

I have this problem on both my Windows 2000 and XP (SP2) machines. After I detach the climateprediction project my SETI project executes as before without problems. It seems there is a clash between the two or something wrong with the climateprediction project. I'm detaching from this project for now. Cheers Z |

If I ok, or suspend/unsuspend it starts back up and gets the error in under 3 seconds.... Looking for other ideas. |

Yet another user experiencing this problem. WinXP SP1 (haven't gotten around to installing SP2 yet) Athlon XP1800 512MB PC2100 Boinc 4.05 /w SETI@Home, ClimatePrediction.net Homebuilt rig After experiencing the error, nothing would crunch until I restarted BOINC. After the restart SETI has been going fine, but has not preempted yet so I can't say if ClimatePrediction is working OK again. |

I also have the FORTRAN run-time error of the "syntax error in NAMELIST input" variety. I have an HP Pavillion notebook running XP SP2. The project was originally working and calculated up to 2% before crashing in a different fashion possibly related to me trying to run a game while calculation. In any case, I doubt this incident was relevant to what then occured. After the crash and restart, BOINC downloaded a new workunit and then started giving me the run-time error described by others. I suspect the problem may have to do with recent changes in progam code or workunits. As far as I can tell, the solutions suggested are disabling the firewall and uninstalling junk software from HP. I have tried both giving boinc_gui.exe an exception in the firewall control panel and uninstalling some HP photo and imaging package I never used. Neither of these changes made the slightest bit of difference. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Alex Gerdemann |

Problem possibly solved??? I have this same Fortran problem on both of my AMD/Asus systems (built from scratch with at least 10GB free on each, 512MB RAM, and over 1.8MHZ AMD processors...one each.). One has an HP printer on it and the other has an Epson printer. They are both running Windows XP SP1. (SP2 has yet to download) I have no other HP software running on them. After looking at Carl's post, I got suspicious of my FireWall program. I'm using Zone Alarm on both systems. I looked at the Program Control and found that only the Boinc GUI was listed (fully trusted across the board). I have since added the Boinc Core Client to the list. I'll soon find out if it had any affect. I'm not willing to turn my Zone Alarm firewall software off, it has been very effective. I'm also not going to be changing registry files or other highly invasive procedures. The climateprediction software should be tolerant enough to work on such a common configuration. ========================================================================== This is the post from Carl (referred to below by "TeamPicard") Hi, I can't access my boinc account (just in an "easyinternet" in Berlin and no access to my boinc key or oxford email) -- so if someone could post this to the boinc board I would appreciate it. ----------------------------- The "conout" error message from Fortran would seem to be something on the user's system that is "intercepting" normal "stdout" for fortran (which is actually redirected to stdout_um.txt). So I would think it's some sort of "over-zealous" virus-scanner or other low-level file driver (such as the HP one in their version of Win that someone mentioned). for the "bad namelist - speca_sw*" message it could be the same thing, but it seems like the file was corrupted in download based on other messages. I'm not quite sure why so many people are getting these "bad URL" errors and unfortunately boinc doesn't do an "automatic retry." My guess is that slow connections are tough to the web servers, as far as reliability of download, or perhaps the user has firewall software that is "intercepting" the transmissiondownload and corrupting the file? It doesn't seem to be OS related since different win versions and mac and linux users have had this problem. I bumped up the "KeepAlive" and "Timeout" on the web server which seems to have helped people with slow connections, but this problem is still happening so I think it is a "third-party conflict" (i.e. firewall or some other device driver messing with the file download) Update: I just saw a post on the BOINC problems board from ThymeLawn -- it seems like the firewalls are the problem, blocking our mirror sites: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc/forum_thread.php?id=455&post=2498#2498 since we have numerous mirrors, and other BOINC projects will have numerous sites, it's probably best to just allow BOINC access to everything on port 80? it will only "send" i.e. it's not like an open port or "server", and BOINC validates checksums and signs executables so it is very safe. |

I also have the NAMELIST version of the error: No HP - No firewall. Win2k No problems with SETI before attaching this project. Detaching until fix. Thanks! |

> Windows 98? > >Its not HP specific - having the same problems as other users, I have a Poweroid 3.06GHZ box XPPro SP2 - loads of memory and disk space. I get the Fortran error message every minute or so. I run Nortons, will have a look to see if that is the problem in my case. I am a SETI user, still am, tried this one for the first time today. SETI runs fine, so it looks like some sort of clash in the Client software, not BOINC itself. Regards Zy |

I'm having the same problem that alex has, the error message is _identical_ except the file path (the name is the same). Running BOINC/Win32 4.05 on W2K/SP4, homemade PIII-933. Temporarily detaching. Cheers, -- dannyf42, Bologna, .it |
