How much disk space does the Sulpher model use, and what happens if that exceeds the amount of disk space I have?

I have a 1 GB hard drive, and being generous, I allow BOINC to use most of it. However, I have noticed that when the Sulpher model gets about 10% to 12% completed, it has used about 1 GB, and my model fails. It has done this now for 3 models.

Doesn\'t BOINC check to see if the user has enough disk space to hold the expected amount of output?

Is there any value in having this partly completed models, which I presume now someone else is going to have download and recalculate what I have done and take them to completion?

Is there some way to not download the Sulpher models, and only download the smaller models?

Doing climate research is HW demanding and Sulphur cycle models are even a bit more demanding on HD space. To be more exact, up to 2.7GB are used just before model is completed (about 1GB archive of completed model).

1GB HD...must be very old piece. Is it a typo? Only OS like Win XP takes more space. Perhaps you ment 1GB free. I would consider upgrading your HD anyway.

It is usefull to complete at least first phase (partial results get uploaded) but completing whole model is what CPDN researchers are looking for.

No, so far there is no other than Suplhur models available. Soon, there will be Coupled models which are less HD space demaning (but even more CPU intensive).

There aren\'t any smaller models. Slab finished late last year, as they have now learned enough from them.
There is extra data in the first phase of sulphur models, which is wanted to feed into the soon-to-start coupled ocean model, so if you completed phase one of your sulphur model, and it uploaded OK, them it was useful.

BOINC does check your hd, but only by looking at the values you have set in the preferences on your Account page.
If you have it set for 1Gig, then you shouldn\'t get any data sets.
Sulphur needs about 2.5Gigs just before the finish, which then gets zipped down to about 900Megs.

The coupled model will be different, uploading more data more often, and using less hd space.

1 GB is correct. Rather than using my rotating drive, I\'m using either a USB memory stick memory, or a compact flash type of solid state drive, and 1 GB is the max size of what I have (and I\'m allowing BOINC to use it all).

I have no idea if Phase I was completed within that first 10 to 12% before the 1 GB was consumed & abended.

Seems like I should temporarly suspend (or not accept new work) myself from the climate project until those new models are available.

If your\'e still \'here\', you can tell if phase one was completed and uploaded OK, by looking at the page for that model. If it finished, you will have two graphs at the bottom. It takes a bit of \'digging\' to get to it, and I don\'t know which of your computers you\'re talking about. Click on P1 to see each graph.

Humm, this could be interesting. How does one \"look at the page for that model\"?

On your Account page, (the blue menu to the left of here), there are 2 choices:
1) Computers on this account
2) Results

If you know the result name, (\"Result ID\" or \"Work unit ID\"), you can click on: Results, then click \"Result ID\" for the model in question.
Or, of course, go through each in turn.

Or you can use 1) above and click on: \"Computers on this account\", then click on Results, and then \"Result ID\", etc.

Choice 1 just has an extra step, but lets you see what is on each computer.

If you don\'t have any graphs, click on my name on one of my posts, and have a look at some of mine. There are a variety of \'interesting\' results if you persist.
(Near the start of the list, if I remember.)
Normally, the last phase and the total both climb, but some of mine drop. In a couple of them, \'right through the floor\'.
And one has some missing data, so the chart \'goes through the roof\'.

Keep in mind that this is \'data to give the user something for his effort\', not the data which the researchers use, which is more extensive.

The spinups are only there as a place to record the credits from the spinup beta site. The \'data\' in them is just dummy data.

Phase 1 ends at 20%, if you were getting to 10 to 12% you were just half way or a little more through phase 1.

If you don\'t want BOINC on your main HD there are a lot of old 6.4 gig drives around. One of those could be installed as a 2nd or 3rd HD to run BOINC on and have room for the Sulpher Model. If that goes you will not be out much if anything.
