When i shut my computer i always go in to the boinc manager and press file > exit.
Is this making my model rewind unnecissarily? it was at 1830 before I exited and it has had 81.21 hours CPU time. when i rebooted it was in 1815.

Should I be suspending it before I exit the manager to shut my system down? I have read conflicting advise (when trying to suss out how to back it up!)

please, anyone who answers can you keep the IT stuff simple as some of the posts are too technical for IT simpletons like me

I think you have 2 models running on your hyperthreaded processor.

I have never heard of a model going back from 1830 to 1815. So I suspect you are just looking at the other model.

The model saves its work every 3 model days (144 timesteps) so you should loose only a small amount. There are other possible rewinds if the model crashes but only of a model month and a model year. Some people have found models going back to the beginning :( ! but I don\'t think it is possible to go back from 1830 to 1815 because the information to do it wouldn\'t be available.

You only show one computer/HostID which was registered Feb 14th. It has two results associated with it. One was downloaded on the 14th and has been trickling up (sending status reports) to the server about once a day. It has 7 trickles which is about 30% of the way through phase 1, which goes from 1811-1825. So being in 1815 makes sense. The other resultID was just downloaded today, and has no trickles associated with it. I\'m not sure the first model/result could have gotten to 1830, which would have been 5 years into the 2nd phase, in 80 hours. That would have been incredibly fast.

Thanks for your help! The second model you are referring to downloaded the other day when I suspended the first model. so I have aborted the 2nd one as it wasn\'t my intention to download a second! I hope this isn\'t a problem for you guys my apologies if it is.

I have been trying to learn as much as I can about how it all works but there are so many bits of advice its sometimes hard to work out what is right! The reason I used the suspend was that someone on one of the posts said this was neccesay before exiting the BOINC client, I have now sussed that it is ok to just hit file>exit.

Just looking at my model now it appears to be in 1817 does this sound about right? I am concerned about whether it was running ok for 2 reasons 1) I haven\'t managed to work out how to save the models progress and 2)I was worried that because I turn my computer off at night, that it was restarting from the beginning because I haven\'t backed it up.

It\'s almost impossible to tell (with my inexperience at least!) if the model is doing a scheduled rewind or if it gone awry!

Also as you seem to know your stuff, On my compter BOINC is set to run at start-up (which is a problem because it doesn\'t give me chance to connect to the internet before it starts). How can I change this?

Re Suspending:
There are 3, in different places, each giving a different level of control.
1) In the menu; This suspends BOINC.
2) In the Projects tab; This suspends whichever project\'s name is highlighted.
3) In the work tab; This suspends whichever model is highlighted.

If you use 3), BOINC soon thinks \"The science app isn\'t doing anything; It must have run out of work, so I\'ll get some more\". And you end up with 2 models.

If you want to Suspend before Exiting, the one to use is 1). I got into the habit of doing this over a year ago, and, while it is apparently no longer necessary with the latest version of BOINC, I like to shut down programs gently, rather than just \"pull the rug out from under them\".

To use 3), it is necessary to add an extra step first: In the projects tab, highlight the project whose model is going to be Suspended, and then click \"No new work\".

To stop BOINC running on startup, just remove it\'s icon from the Windows startup folder. You could make a temp folder under it, and drag the icon into it. If you don\'t like the new arrangement, drag it back. Put a shortcut to Boincmgr (in the BOINC folder), onto your desktop to start it manually.
