After registering for BOINC climate prediction and getting an up-to-date (4.05) version of the BOINC client, I tried to attach to the project. That seems to have worked OK. I run Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 ES on a Dual Processor Hyperthreaded Intel Xeon box (4 logical processors: to CPU chips). My BOINC client is boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu But the downloads do not seem to work, nor does it attempt to run the application even when I have spare CPUs to run on. In the past I received similar messages, and downloaded, I believe 4 files (that may not have been any good either)> Here is my most recent attempt. It got the following files first: -rw-r--r-- 1 boinc boinc 3223552 Aug 31 09:52 hadsm3se_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip -rw-r--r-- 1 boinc boinc 995328 Aug 31 09:53 hadsm3um_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip Aug 31 09:15:45 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:15:45 [climateprediction.net] Host ID is 4593 Aug 31 09:18:54 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:18:54 [climateprediction.net] Sending request to scheduler: http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi Aug 31 09:18:59 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:18:59 [climateprediction.net] Scheduler RPC to http://climateapps2.oucs.ox.ac.uk/cpdnboinc_cgi/cgi succeeded Aug 31 09:18:59 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:18:59 [climateprediction.net] Project prefs: using your defaults Aug 31 09:18:59 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:18:59 [climateprediction.net] Started download of hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu Aug 31 09:18:59 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:18:59 [climateprediction.net] Started download of hadsm3se_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] Giving up on download of hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu: File downloaded was not the correct file or was garbage from bad URL Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] Giving up on download of hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu: File downloaded was not the correct file or was garbage from bad URL Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: md5_file: can\'t open projects/climateprediction.net/hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] verify_downloaded_file(): projects/climateprediction.net/hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu: internal error Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] Checksum or signature error for hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] Started download of hadsm3um_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] verify_downloaded_file(): projects/climateprediction.net/hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu: internal error Aug 31 09:39:32 trillian boinc_4.05_i686-pc-linux-gnu: 2004-08-31 09:39:32 [climateprediction.net] Checksum or signature error for hadsm3_4.03_i686-pc-linux |

I have seen this before with modem users, it seems to be that you are getting "timeouts" from one of the download servers so an incomplete (hence bad checksum) file is created. I'm not quite sure what the solution is right now. |

I've restarted the servers with "KeepAlive=On" so hopefully that will help. I've also reset "max results" for all hosts today in case you want to try again. |

I have seen that connection download stuff up to about 13KBytes/second on good days with data amenable to hardware compression. I do not suppose executable programs compress all that well. And today is not a good day for downloading. Somewhere in the range 2KBytes/sec to 4KBytes/sec. I suppose I do want to try again. Right now I have the following files: -rw------- 1 boinc boinc 10525 Aug 31 10:34 03ol_400029758.zip -rw------- 1 boinc boinc 4493630 Aug 31 10:53 hadsm3data_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip -rw------- 1 boinc boinc 3803382 Aug 31 10:01 hadsm3se_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip -rw------- 1 boinc boinc 4010230 Aug 31 10:34 hadsm3um_4.03_i686-pc-linux-gnu.zip I imagine these are all I need -- other than the client application program! So do I reset project and restart to try again? Or does the server realize I am missing the program and will send it again? |

I think it will try to get the missing hadsm3_4.03_i686* file when you restart BOINC. I think future versions need perhaps 3 retries on a failed URL. |
